Cinema Siren's Top Movie Trends and Takeaways of 2012

The great, the bizarre and the awful.

The box office receipts didn't automatically match studio expectations in 2012. For once, some of the most lauded movies took money away from the mediocre ones. This year we saw superheroes, grown-up movies, genre mash-ups and cartoons scoring places at the top of the box office. Much was made about big flops, from the divisive John Carter and ridiculous Battleship, both of which starred the same unlucky actor. This topsy turvy year in the world of film is likely to lead to some interesting shifts in focus for actors and filmmakers alike. Out of respect and a hope for healing I'm sure we all wish for the families involved in Colorado, Cinema Siren isn't going to spend much time on the movie event in 2012 that made the most newspapers.  Any…

Sci-fi Fans: 'Carter's' Calling!

Movie review of "John Carter," rated PG-13.

Yes, Virginia, there is a John Carter, and it's good! Last week, I wrote a review of "John Carter" that was on the positive side of the 50 percent of the balance of good and bad that were released by critics worldwide.  Here's an update: There is a chorus of strong voices rising comprised of rabid fans of the film, who are creating Facebook pages, blogs, and videos, attempting to get more movie lovers to see for themselves what they believe to be a highly entertaining and sequel-worthy film.  See for yourself on Facebook, where the page "Take me back to Barsoom! Thanks so much for all the wonderful positive feedback! I have to laugh about the critics I encountered today at a closed press preview (for Hunger Games) with whom my stock visually plummeted after my declaring I wrote a positive review for John Carter.
