Northern Virginia Congressmen Gerry Connolly (D-11th) and Jim Moran (D-8th) said Congress is "dysfunctional", as the midnight deadline on sequestration steadily approached. "It's a dysfunctional Congress," said Moran, who spoke with Patch at a ribbon-cutting Friday in Lorton. "I think it ill-serves the people of the United States today. It's very frustrating, very disappointing. It's an institution that is not serving its functions." Connolly does not expect a last-minute compromise on $1.2 trillion in debt reduction, and the U.S. military will be forced to cut $46 billion and domestic defense spending will be cut by $85 billion this year alone. Democratic Senator-elect Tim Kaine, who will be sworn into office Jan. 3, will serve on three Senate committees important to Northern Virginia. His office announced he will serve on the following committees: Kaine had asked to join Armed Services, Health, Education, Labor and Pensions, Foreign Relations and Small Business and Entrepreneurship — in that order, according to a recent blog post on The Washington Post Web site. Last month, Patch asked our readers in Northern Virginia for a favor. We wanted to submit questionnaires to both U.S. Senate candidates in Virginia and we wanted our readers to come up with the questions. You all delivered. Allen discussed key issues including healthcare and the economy.
U.S. Senate candidate and former Virginia Governor George Allen met with seniors and military retirees at The Fairfax retirement community on Tuesday. Both a daughter and wife of Virginia governors, Holton embarked on a listening tour of Northern Virginia on Saturday in support of her husband's candidacy for the U.S Senate.
Former Virginia first lady Anne Holton is going full speed ahead campaigning for husband Tim Kaine, the former governor who hopes to get elected to the U.S. Senate come November. Most polls show a race between Democrat Kaine and probable GOP candidate George Allen as "neck and neck" as Holton herself put it Saturday. Married more than 25 years, Holton and Kaine first met when both were students at Harvard Law School.
