Demolition of Springfield Mall Underway

The mall, which has been under construction since mid-summer 2012, will be redeveloped into a town center by the end of 2014.

The official demolition of Springfield Mall began Monday morning, as construction crews make way for the new Springfield Town Center slated to be complete in the fall of 2014. “We’re here today to celebrate a major milestone for this mall. It may not seem like a big deal to some people, but it is a big deal to people who live in Springfield and businesses in and around Springfield to see this process actually start. It’s taken a long time to get to this point,” Fairfax County Lee District Supervisor Jeff McKay said. He was joined at the demolotion by officials from Vornado Realty Trust and Springfield civic groups. The redevelopment of the mall and transformation into what will become an upscale town center is part of a three-year effort …

I remember the original mall. Among its occupants was a German place with desserts and coffee or tea. That evolved finally into sandwiches, wonderful tasting sandwiches. That all disappeared within a year. What came after they closed was some sort of useless shop which likewise disappeared. Then until the first correction of problems like a second floor that tended to bounce up and down. There …   more ›

Springfield Mall Settles Bobbie Bosworth Lawsuit

Bobbie Bosworth's husband will receive $2.5 million from Springfield Mall and others involved in a lawsuit after her abduction and death in 2008.

The owners of the Springfield Mall settled a lawsuit with the husband of Bobbie Bosworth, a woman from Alexandria who was abducted from the mall and killed in 2008, according to the Washington Post.  WUSA9 reported that two men forced her to use her ATM card at PDQ Mini Mart in Woodbridge and then crashed her car while fleeing the scene, killing Bosworth. One of the suspects was also killed.  The Post reports that her husband, Tom, will receive $2.5 million from the owner of the mall, Vornado Realty Trust, and its insurers, as well as the owners of PDQ Mini Mart. State Farm also paid $100,000 in an earlier settlement.  Click here for the full story.    More on Springfield Mall:  Springfield Mall: Health Club, Movie Theater in Redevelopment…

Springfield Mall to Close All but Anchor Stores

Major renovations scheduled to begin in July will leave only the anchor stores intact.

Springfield Mall will close all stores except the anchor department stores come July, according to tenants at the mall. Macy's, Target and JCPenney will remain open as New York-based Vornado Realty Trust begins a two-year renovation of the property. Shopper Mary Yastishock said she remembered Princess Diana’s 1985 visit to Springfield Mall. “It’s changed so much since then,” she said. "For two decades, coming here has been like watching a neighborhood die.” Her college-aged daughter Alex agreed. “I remember coming as a child to visit Santa and ride the carousel, then as a teen to the movie theaters,” she said.  “This used to be a really happening place.” “Now we come to see which stores have closed,” said Mary. “It seems forever they’ve …

Springfield Mall Redevelopment May Start This Fall

Half the mall's storefronts are empty in preparation for major renovations.

Those long-awaited, heavily-rumored renovations to Springfield Mall may start as early as this fall, according to Fairfax County officials. One clue that renovations are coming soon is that right now roughly half the storefronts in the once-prosperous Springfield Town Center are empty. “A lot of the vacancies that exist in the mall—believe it or not—are deliberate,” Fairfax County Supervisor Jeff McKay told Patch.   The vacancies will allow stores to move around and remain operational while large sections of the building are renovated. Other vacancies are deliberate for a different reason: “[The owners have] not been renewing leases for stores that they don’t think fit in with the long-term redevelopment plans for the mall.” --------- What…
