The Stallions begin their quest for the state crown on Tuesday
The Virginia High School League (VSHL) state baseball tournament is set to get underway Tuesday night at South County Secondary School in Lorton. Recently crowned Northern Region champion, South County hosts Suffolk’s Nansemond River High School, in first round VSHL baseball action at 6 p.m. Tuesday. This year’s Nansemond River Warrior baseball team (20-7) finished as Southeastern District champions, becoming the first-ever Warrior baseball team to do so in the school’s 21-year history, a meritorious feat in the competitive Southeastern District. The Warriors were defeated in their regional final game on Thursday, but still earned a berth to the state tournament as region runner-up. The South County Stallions (26-0) enter Tuesday’s contest…

Frazier K's nine as South County handles Madison 10-0, rematch with Lake Braddock next
The further the South County Stallions go in the Northern Region tournament, the better they seem to be playing. On Wednesday, that meant six near perfect innings on the mound from Tyler Frazier and a 3-for-3, four RBI night from Mike Perez to give the Stallions a 10-0 win over Madison in the Northern Region semifinals and preserve a perfect 25-0 record. Frazier struck out nine – all but one swinging – and harmlessly scattered five hits as the Warhawks managed only one runner past first base. He also helped his own cause when he drove in South County’s first run of the night in the top of the first inning. It would prove to be the only offense he needed. “He’s on a roll right now, he’s pitching very well,” said South County head coach Mark…

Stallions put up five in the first, Beal allows one hit through six to down Bulldogs
Kyle Fairbanks, Cameron Thompson and Mike Perez provided the offense, while Evan Beal dominated on the mound as South County continued its playoff march with an 11-1 win over Westfield at Lake Braddock on Monday afternoon. Beal went six solid innings, allowing just one hit and one run while fanning seven. Fairbanks and Thompson drove in three runs apiece and Perez smashed a pair of doubles and a solo homer to lead the Stallions’ charge into the Northern Region Class AAA semifinals. South County will face the winner of the Yorktown/Madison quarterfinal at Robinson Secondary on Wednesday night (7 p.m.) The winner of the regional semifinal will be guaranteed a spot in the state playoffs. South County’s first five batters scored, staking Beal …

Blake Thompson's late double lifts South County over Lake Braddock for district baseball title
Years from now, when South County baseball coach Mark Luther looks back on his coaching career, he’s going to remember the wins, the losses, and also, Page 25 of the rule book. That’s where it says a player is not allowed to come off the bench to run twice in the same inning. A 10-minute delay for umpires to check the rule book was precipitated by junior Blake Thompson’s two-run double in the bottom of the sixth that gave South County a 4-3 lead over Lake Braddock in the finals of the Patriot District tournament Monday night at West Springfield. The Stallions added another run in the key inning and Evan Beal worked out of a seventh-inning jam to secure the district title with a 5-3 win. South County moved to 22-0 on the season while Lake …

Tyler Frazier strikes out 11 in complete game to lead Stallions
This one was easy. Two weeks ago, West Springfield and South County met in Lorton, and the Stallions pulled out a wild 15-14 win in the bottom of the seventh. On Saturday night, in the Patriot District semifinals, South County advanced to the district title game behind a dominating 11-strikeout performance from Tyler Frazier. The tall righty, bound for UNC-Greensboro after the school year, started out with fastballs and finished with curveballs, stifling the explosive West Springfield offense and leading the Stallions to a 8-1 win. As the district’s top seed, South County was the home team even though the game was hosted by West Springfield. Frazier matched his season high in K’s and only allowed two hits, each coming in the top of the …

They begin the postseason tomorrow in West Springfield
They may have been small. They may have been still learning the game. They may have been awkward. But the seeds for South County’s attention-grabbing, perfect-so-far baseball season (20-0 and winners of the Patriot District regular season) were planted back in 2000, when this year’s group of seniors were just seven and eight- year-old Little Leaguers. One Springfield team had South County’s third baseman Luke Bondurant and star pitcher Evan Beal. While the West Springfield team had the Stallions’ starting shortstop and No. 2 pitcher, Tyler Frazier, throwing to this year’s clutch-hitting, pitch-blocking catcher Mike Perez. “Some of those teams were so good,” said Beal’s father Frank, “that it was harder to get out of the district than win …

South County's Mike Perez drives in six, earns relief win, solidifies Player of the Year standing
It was a wild game that deserved a wild finish. With defending state champion West Springfield threatening to give top-ranked South County its first loss of the season, the Stallions scored two runs in the bottom of the seventh without getting a hit and moved to 12-0 in the Patriot District and 18-0 overall. This has been a season of firsts for the South County baseball team. First regular-season sweep of Lake Braddock, first time finishing April undefeated, and with Friday night’s 15-14 win, the first regular-season sweep of the Spartans. But it’s not the first time, however, that coach Mark Luther’s team needed last-at-bat heroics to win a game. “We never say it’s over, that’s for sure. We keep coming. That’s kind of the personality of …
