South County Junior Allison Belkowitz Goes for the Girl Scout Gold Award

Belkowitz hosted a "play-in-a-day" at South County Middle School.

South County junior Allison Belkowitz went for gold on Tuesday - specifically, the Girl Scout Gold Award. Belkowitz hosted a "play-in-a-day" event at South County Middle School, and oversaw more than 70 elementary and middle schoolers creating multiple productions for their parents from scratch.  "In the area there are a lot of underprivileged kids who can't do things like go to a theater summer camp," said the 16-year-old Belkowitz. "This is an opportunity for these kids to learn something new and gain an appreciation of the arts." The students were broken up by grades and spent three hours designing sets and costumes and writing and rehearsing their scripts. South County middle school drama students also assisted Belkowitz in the event…

Letter: South County Parents Need To Drive By Example

Be safe out there!

Each morning, I travel out of Washington, D.C. on Rock Creek’s winding lanes, weave around the Pentagon and onto 395 South, traverse the chaos that is Springfield’s Mixing Bowl, where drivers jockey for position, and exit I-95 in Lorton to begin my day at South County Middle School as a teacher of tomorrow’s business, community, and industry leaders.  But as my commute nears its end on the streets around my schools’ campuses, I have one last traffic hurdle to face, and that hurdle constantly forces me to ask myself, “What kind of leaders will they become?”   Repeatedly, South County parents have been asked – through reason, and appeals to conscientious and responsible driving – to adhere to the Kiss and Ride policies communicated to them …

The Mustang Morning News Is On The Air!

Friday morning saw the first broadcast from the news team at South County Middle School.

"Good morning, Mustangs!" said a smiling Ellen Gallagher to her classmates on Friday from the South County Middle School broadcast studio.  At 9:20 a.m., all classrooms turned their televisions to Channel 6. Gallagher's friendly greeting was followed by the Pledge of Allegiance, and a morning round-up of news with her co-anchor Keighan Speer.  "Remember that the PTSO is still collecting quarters to help the victims of Hurricane Sandy," said Speer. "This is an opportunity for you to make a difference!" The broadcast lasted about five minutes. Afterward, principal Marsha Manning congratulated the anchors. "You all did a wonderful job. You young ladies are pros at this already," she said. "You really exceeded our expectations."  Cheryl …

On Jan. 25, 1881, he and Alexander Graham Bell founded the Oriental Telephone Company. Thirty-four years later, on Jan. 25, 1915, Edison made the first transcontinental phone call, and spoke from New York to Thomas Watson in San Francisco.  2. Think you're cold now? On this day in 1945, the bitter German offensive - the Battle of the Bulge of World War II - ended.  3. Famous Birthdays: Former Montana Republican Sen. Conrad Burns is 78; Canadian actress Mia Kirshner is 38 and American singer Alicia Keys is 32.  4. The weather today will be cold! South County Middle School Opens Doors

The home of the Mustangs is now open for business.

On Tuesday morning, 1,037 South County Middle School seventh and eighth graders walked into a new era.  Seventh-grader Jaelize Gomez, 12, was anxious before entering the school. "I'm excited and nervous," Gomez said to Patch. "It's a new school, it's huge. I'm looking forward to drama, but I'm nervous about the homework. Sometimes it can take me an hour-and-a-half to finish."  Fairfax County School Board member Dan Storck, who represents the Mount Vernon District, was also on-hand when school opened. "Can you believe this? Golly!" said Storck. "You just can't imagine how amazed I am that we are actually standing in front of South County Middle School on the first day at school. The South County community and the School Board did what many …

South County Middle School Holds Open House

There are three months and counting before those doors open to a new generation of students.

Hundreds of students, parents and neighbors checked out the South County Middle School on Tuesday night for its first-ever open house. The verdict: the school is big, new and empty. In fact, the home of the Mustangs received little criticism from future attendees. "I like it!" said rising seventh-grader Lily O'Donnell. "I like how big it is. I like the big lockers. The classrooms even seem bigger than South County Secondary."  Dan Storck, the school board representative for the Mount Vernon District, was all smiles. "This is a dream come true, and it's hard work realized," he told Patch. "It's such a wonderful feeling to know that a group of people in the community can come together and make a real difference in their schools and lives."  …
