South County Little League Breaks Ground for Concession Stand at Lower Potomac Park

Fans will soon be able to cheer little leaguers in style in Lorton.

Representatives of South County Little League broke ground Friday for construction of a concession stand/bathroom facility at Lower Potomac Park. The field has undergone numerous renovations over the past five years, and the concession stand is scheduled to be completed this spring.  "Based on these efforts, a new sense of community has been established at the park with children as young as four playing baseball on the new tee ball field alongside teenagers playing baseball on the 90 foot baseball field," according to South County Little League Board member Bob Kirk in an email to Patch.  A number of local contributors were present at the ceremony, including representatives from Covanta Energy, Foulger Pratt, Vulcan Materials Company, BC …

Lorton Getting Greener With Reclaimed Water

Residential filtered sink, bath and laundry water that would have gone into the Potomac River and Chesapeake Bay will be reused at ball fields, golf course and energy facility.

Starting in May, more than 400 million gallons of reclaimed water will be used as coolant at the I-95 Energy Resource Recovery Facility, and millions of gallons will go to the South County Little League fields at Lower Potomac Park and the Laurel Hill Golf Club.  Reclaimed water isn't filtered enough to be drinkable, but that wouldn't stop Mount Vernon District Supervisor Gerry Hyland (D) from taking a sip. "I would drink it, even though it might not be quite as good as regular drinking water," he recently told Patch. "I'm just tickled pink that we found a way to capture and reuse that water other than putting it in the Potomac or Chesapeake Bay. This water reclamation project is definitely a positive approach towards reducing irrigation expenses at public parks and other facilities. I do not see Pohick Bay Regional Park Golf Course listed as a participant in this wastewater reuse project. This golf course is on Mason Neck and is near the Noman M.
