Patriot District Boys Basketball Honors

Two Stallions make the list

The Patriot District was one of the most competitive leagues in the region for boys basketball during the 2010-11 regular season. Five of its teams finished the year ranked in the Top 10, and the four that have advanced to the Northern Region tournament (T.C. Williams, Lake Braddock, Annandale, Woodson) are all a threat to go deep. The coaches of the Patriot District handed out awards last weekend, which we have listed below. Congratulations to all the winners. 2010-11 Patriot District Boys Basketball Regular-Season Awards Player of the Year Karl Zielger, Annandale   First Team All-District D’Angelo Boyce, Annandale Tyrell Sitton, T.C. Northern Region Report: South County Teams Gear Up for Playoffs

Boys and girls hoops teams begin quest for championship

The regular season is over, the coaches have named the All-District teams (and we’ll name our All-Region teams next week) and the district tournaments are underway. Before we make our predictions, let’s set the stage for the eight boys and girls district tournaments in the Northern Region. The tournament brackets are static, meaning the winner of the 8 vs. 1 game plays the winner of the 5 vs. 4 game in the semifinals, while the winner of the 6 vs. 3 game takes on the winner of the 7 vs. 2. The winners of those games meet in the championship. Patriot Boys: (8) Lee vs. (1) T.C. Williams (5) South County vs. (4) Woodson (6) West Potomac vs. (3) Annandale (7) West Springfield vs. (2) Lake Braddock Patriot Girls: (8) Lee vs. (1) West …

Northern Region Report: February 8

District races heating up entering season's final week

As we enter the final week of the regular season, district races are at full tilt across the region. The Langley boys and Oakton girls are the only teams that have clinched their district regular season title, and the West Springfield girls have clinched a share of the Patriot District. The five other districts are up for grabs with two games remaining. Before we get to that, let’s take a look at the standings. Boys and Girls Basketball Rankings

Poll remains stable in season's final week

BOYS The top of the Patch Northern Region Coaches poll bunched up, but the top held steady, with T.C. Williams, Herndon, Chantilly and Annandale holding on to the first four spots for the final week of the regular season. There was little action anywhere in the rankings, as other than Woodson and Lake Braddock swapping the No. 5 and No. 7 spots, everything else remained the same. Westfield, tied for 10th with Yorktown last week, fell out of the rankings. Patch Northern Region Coaches Poll, Week of Feb. 7: Dropping Out: Westfield (Last week – Ranked T-10th.) Others Receiving Votes: Mount Vernon – 4, Robinson – 2, Westfield – 1 GIRLS A couple of new teams snuck into the bottom of the Patch Northern Region Coaches Poll, as Yorktown and T.C. …

Stallion Boys and Girls Ranked in Basketball Poll

Girls 7th, guys 9th

Stability is the word in the Patch Northern Region Boys Basketball Coaches Poll, as six of the top eight spots remain unchanged with Woodson and Edison flip-flopping in the No. 5 and No. 6 spots. Herndon narrowed T.C. Williams’ grip on the top spot thanks to No. 4 Annandale’s win over the Titans last week. All 10 teams from last week’s rankings remained this week, with Westfield forcing a tie in the last spot with Yorktown. Patch Northern Region Coaches Poll, Week of Jan. 31: Others Receiving Votes: Robinson – 4, Mount Vernon – 4, Fairfax – 1 Oakton and West Springfield held onto the top two spots in the Patch Northern Region Girls Basketball Coaches Poll this week. Behind them, there was plenty of reshuffling, as only Edison held onto its…

Northern Region Report: February 1

Stallions have a big game tonight versus Woodson

Another week, another round of cancellations for Northern Region basketball teams. While the teams scramble to get the games made up, we have just two weeks left in the regular season before district tournaments begin. Edison and South County may not have an elite team on either the boys or girls side of the Northern Region, but the schools are the only ones in the region to have both of their teams ranked. We’ll take a look at that, along with two huge matchups in the Patriot District on Tuesday, but first let’s update the standings through Monday. Boys: Concorde District Patriot District National District Liberty District Girls: Concorde District Patriot District National District Liberty District At the top of the combined power …

Johnson Keys Second Consecutive Stallion Win

Size too much for West Potomac to handle

One could easily describe this week for South County as one of uncertainty in terms of the direction of the season. Coming off six straight losses and having to play three district games in five days, the Stallions were certain they had to show up this week. After defeating Lee on Monday, South County (10-7, 5-4 Patriot) beat West Potomac 65-54 last night, to get back-to-back wins for the first time in nearly a month. The win also allowed the Stallions to get back above .500 in the Patriot District. “We have our up’s and our down’s and we’re about to get on our up real soon,” South County senior forward Marqueice Johnson said. Having already defeated West Potomac, 73-61 on Dec. 14, the win gives the Stallions a sweep of the season series …

That's a fair point Stallion Fan. Unfortunately, quantifying defensive play is a bit of a challenge. If there's any student-athletes in particular who is worthy of mention, feel free to let me know and we'll give them the credit they deserve. I'm at shawn@patch.com. Thanks for reading!   more ›

Stallions Snap Losing Streak

Still holding out playoff hopes

The losing feeling in 2011 is over for South County’s boy’s basketball team after the Stallions handily defeated Lee 67-41 to break a six-game losing streak. “We need to start getting back on track like we used to when we were 8-1 and got to keep playing tough,” South County forward Nik Biberaj said. “It’s a good start.”  The Stallions had not won a game since a non-conference 76-67 victory over Wilson on Dec. 29. Lee was the perfect opponent to start a winning streak.  The Lancers have not won a game on the scoreboard all season, but technically have a victory due to an Oakton forfeit.  South County led 23-11 at the end of the first quarter with nine different players scoring in the period. The Stallions led the entire way after trailing …

Boys and Girls Basketball Rankings

Stallion girls hold at No. 9, boys drop to No. 10

Herndon’s dramatic 56-53 win over Chantilly last week bumped the Hornets up a spot to No. 2 in the Patch Northern Region Coaches Rankings, and knocked Chantilly down a slot to No. 3. Until further notice, the top spot belongs to T.C. Williams, as the Titans again came in as a unanimous No. 1 selection this week. Two teams make their debuts in the rankings this week. With a win over still-No. 4 Annandale, the pollsters could no longer ignore the Lake Braddock Bruins, who came in at No. 7. We also have our first Liberty District team in the Top 10, as the Langley Saxons, still undefeated in the district, debut at No. 8. Falling out of the rankings were a pair of Concorde District teams, Westfield and Robinson. With a win over National …
