A proposal by the Virginia Department of Transportation to apply a $1 fee to all E-ZPass users in the state has been altered and will exclude existing customers — at least until they replace their transponders. The fees were initially proposed to take effect July 1, but the new fee structure has been delayed until Sept. 1. Several state legislators and commuters balked at the plan to charge everyone using a transponder a $1 monthly fee, and VDOT ultimately relented by focusing fees instead on new users and customers who replace their transponders. Tolls and related fees have become a particular concern of drivers along the Dulles Toll Road because those fares are expected to rise significantly to pay for Metro’s Silver Line project. …

Public hearings on fiscal year 2013 budget, tax rate and potential movement on county executive search during the April 10 Board of Supervisors meeting.
The Fairfax County Board of Supervisors will vote Tuesday on the county’s participation in Phase II of the Dulles Metrorail project. Anthony Griffin, who will retire as county executive later this month, is recommending the board confirm its participation in the project while remaining vigilant in its pursuit of additional funding for the $2.7 billion extension. Failure to participate could mean significant changes to the direction of the project. Some Fairfax County residents think the project is too expensive, and are worried about drastic increases on the Dulles Toll Road, which is funding much of the project. A public hearing on Phase 2 of Dulles Metrorail is set for 5 p.m. Tuesday, during board meeting in Fairfax.
The Fairfax County Board of Supervisors will hold a public hearing on the county’s role in Phase 2 of the Dulles Metrorail project at 5 p.m. Tuesday during their regularly scheduled meeting. Fairfax County transportation officials held hearings during the last week to inform residents how the $2.7 billion project was being financed and to gather ideas for station names. According to officials, Fairfax County will contribute anywhere from $900 million to $965 million for both phases of the construction. On Tuesday, the board will cover the financing of the project, but station names, a popular topic in the Silver Line discussion, will not be part of the hearing. Last week, the Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority (MWAA) released new cost estimates for Phase II of Rail to Dulles. These new estimates are $1 billion lower than previous estimates and are consistent with what we have been working with during the past year. Fairfax County and other stakeholders came together over the past year to address rising cost estimates for Phase II. Working with our staff and project partners, Loudoun County, the Commonwealth of Virginia, and the U.S. Department of Transportation, we were able to bring the cost of Phase II down by $700 million. The savings were achieved in part by moving to an above ground station at the airport, a smaller rail yard, and purchasing fewer rail cars. I believe these important…

Group concerned project may fail due to mounting costs
Business leaders from Fairfax and Loudoun counties have sent a letter to the Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority (MWAA) Board of Directors calling for significant cost reductions in the Phase II segment of the Dulles Corridor Metrorail Project. Estimated costs for Phase II have reached $3.5 billion, about a $1 billion higher than original projections. MWAA's recent decision to build the Dulles International Airport station below ground rather than above ground has added about $330 million to the price tag. The best place to get an E-ZPass from is the Mass Pike. No charge upfront for the transponder and no monthly fee. When you go to their site and click "sign up" and it asks you to choose your state make sure to choose "Massachusetts" to avoid being redirected back to your home state.
