Photos of the Day: Ash Wednesday in Lorton

Today marks the first day of Lent. Giving anything up this year?

See people walking around with dirty foreheads today? Today is Ash Wednesday - and Christian priests marked their foreheads with ashes to recognize the beginning of the 40-day Lenten season, which means a fast of their choosing that is lifted on Easter Sunday. Patch stopped by Pohick Church today, and afterward a 7-11 convenience store on Richmond Highway. We took a number of shots, but these two were by far the best.

Tea at Pohick Church

A fashion show, tea and sandwiches

Last Saturday, the parish hall of Pohick Church was transformed into an English tea room. More than 100 people were hosted by the Historic Pohick Church Docents Guild, which brought china to set the tables and made delicious sandwiches and desserts.   The program included a fashion show with 18th century attire and a lesson in deportment for young volunteers. The visitors included members of the DAR, Christ Church, Mount Vernon, Woodlawn and Gunston Hall plantations. The docents are now busy planning an all-day symposium to be held on May 12 featuring original 18th and 19th century clothing and accessories. Admission is $75 (lunch included). Docent led tours follow the 9 a.m. and 11:15 a.m. Sunday services, and are available to groups as…

Pohick Church Will Continue Mission This Summer

Will travel to New Jersey in a few months

For the past 15 years, the Pohick Church youth ministry has been volunteering their time during summer mission trips. This July, 19 teens and five adult sponsors will be traveling to Keansburg, N.J., to work on homes in the community. This is the youth ministry’s first trip to Keansburg. In the past, they have volunteered in Spring Grove, Pa., Elizabeth City, N.C., Brighton, Tn., Sanford, Mi., and Smithers, W.V. “Every mission trip is a success story,” said Rusty Booth. Booth is a part-time youth minster at Pohick Church. “One group worked at a house where the resident had not been able to go outside due to being confined to a wheel chair. They built a ramp and were able to help him get outside and giving him the freedom to go as he …

Great Escape

Historic Pohick Church

The revolutionary era church enjoys resurgence of southern Fairfax

This week's Great Escape isn't very far and it is probably familiar to many Lorton residents. Sure you've looked at Pohick Church while sitting in traffic on Route 1. But our columnist Mike Conway takes an even closer look at the marvelous piece of history we have in our midst. Let's face it, fate has not always been kind to southern Fairfax County. While in the early days of American history it played an important role and housed some key figures in this country's birth, it had to watch the county's center shift to the north during construction of Washington, D.C. and never come back. Pohick Church, the first church established in the colonies north of the Occoquan River and the established center of Truro Parish, which included all the …

Thanks Mike! The church on the corner of US 1 and Old Colchester is the second Pohick Church. The original should have a plaque somewhere close to the now Cranford Memorial Methodist Church - which was Lewis Chapel. Pohick has undergone some repairs to make up for that the Federal Troops did when they carved up the Limestone frame of east door . I suppose the lovely box pews were calling to the …   more ›

The Power of Christmas During Wartime

Great gestures during the Great War

*This article first appeared earlier this month in the Pohick Post, the official publication of the Pohick Episcopal Church. It is being re-published with the permission of the author. A few years ago, a small notice in Time magazine caught my eye. It mentioned the passing of one Alfred Anderson, a Scotsman, who died in his native land at the age of 109. He had been a veteran of World War I. Nowadays, we do not often talk about World War I. There are not many recent movies about it, and only rarely do we hear it mentioned in the media. But at one time, it was known as the Great War, and the War to End all Wars. In some ways, it was more horrible for its combatants than the World War that followed it. That's because it was the first war to…

Tutors Needed for Pohick Program

Pohick Church hosts students from Gunston ES every Tuesday to help them with school work.

For the 18th year, Pohick Church is sponsoring a tutoring program for area elementary students. On Tuesday evenings, the historic church turns into a classroom, where volunteers help students from Gunston Elementary School with their schoolwork. The program is a partnership between the church and school to help local students who might not receive help elsewhere. Currently, 27 students are being tutored at Pohick by a few volunteers. Teachers at Gunston ES recommend students for the program who need extra help. There is a wait list of more students who need tutoring, but not enough volunteers to accommodate them. These students cover grades K-6 and need help in basic academic subjects. A majority of the students come from non-English …

Pohick Church's Annual Christmas Mart Draws Big Crowds

Hundreds dined on lunch while shopping on the church grounds

On Thursday, almost 300 people came to Pohick Church for their 51st annual Christmas Mart. Craft tables were spread all over the church grounds and a luncheon was served. People could be seen milling around the large selection of crafts and baked good being sold. Chairperson Connie Myers spent almost an entire year planning the event, and the hard work paid off. The Church decorates for the holiday season prior to Christmas Mart and leaves decorations up until after New Year's Day. Hanging mistletoe kissing balls were hung from chandeliers inside the buildings and outside from trees. Large wreaths and a large fruit display highlighted the entrances to the buildings. In the newly decorated Common Room, there were three different seatings …
