Rep. Paul Ryan, Vice President Joe Biden spar in fiery debate, talking economy, abortion, Iran and religion in Thursday night debate.
Vice President Joe Biden and Republican VP candidate U.S. Rep. Paul Ryan of Wisconsin faced off Thursday night in a heated debate that covered foreign wars, tax reform, healthcare, abortion, and their shared faith in the Catholic Church. During the debate, broadcast live from Centre College in Danville, Ky., Biden flexed his experience with foreign policy when answering questions about ending the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, nuclear arms in Iran and whether to send troops to Syria. “The last thing America needs is to get in a ground war in the Middle East,” Biden said. Ryan called the Obama administration’s foreign policy “chaotic,” criticizing the lack of security present during the September attack on the consulate in Benghazi, Libya, …
Tell us: Who performed better at Thursday's debate? Did the debate strengthen or hurt either campaign?
Vice President Joe Biden and Republican hopeful U.S. Rep Paul Ryan engaged in their first and only debate Thursday night in Kentucky. The debate fell a week after the first debate between President Barack Obama and Republican challenger Mitt Romney, in Denver, and just days before their next meeting Oct. 16 at Hofstra University in New York. Viewers in Virginia had different opinions about what topics covered tonight would matter most to voters in the Commonwealth. Other Virginia residents interviewed after the debate said the candidates' differing views on abortion stood out. Tell us: Who performed better at Thursday's debate? Local image consultant weighs in on how Vice President Joe Biden and Congressman Paul Ryan should present themselves in the vice presidential debate Thursday, Oct. 11.
Vice President Joe Biden and Republican candidate Congressman Paul Ryan will take the stage at Thursday night’s vice presidential debate at Centre College in Danville, KY. What does it take for both vice presidential candidates to project confidence during the debates? Northern Virginia image consultant Anne Morgan says both Ryan and Biden need to present themselves as “authoritative, trustworthy, and credible” during Thursday’s debate. Morgan, owner of Color and Image Insight, says the navy suit is the standard for presenting that image to potential voters. “I would say that Al Gore got advice to wear earth tones once upon a time and I’m not sure that was the best advice for his coloring or for his presentation,” Morgan recalled. “…

Democratic Congressman made the statement Tuesday to residents of the Greenspring Retirement Community in Springfield.
Northern Virginia Congressman Gerry Connolly (D-11th) said Tuesday that Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney's recently released comments in a controversial videotape make him "unfit for office." Connolly spoke to about 75 residents of the Greenspring Retirement Community in Springfield during a campaign appearance. Romney's comments, secretly taped without his knowledge, featured a controversial statement in which he said that 47 percent of the electorate do not pay income taxes and are dependent on the government and consequently support President Obama's candidacy. Connolly characterized the statement as "dangerous." "That's very dangerous thinking, and I think that alone suggests Mitt is not fit for that office," said Connolly…

Rob Hartwell is at the Republican National Convention.
Editor's Note: Mason Neck's Rob Hartwell is attending the Republican National Convention in Tampa, FL. Hartwell is a Mitt Romney supporter and past finance chair of the Republican Party of Virginia. I had the opportunity to join Governor Bob McDonnell, State Party GOP Chairman Pat Mullins and other luminaries at a small dinner, and especially enjoyed getting to know his daughters, Jeanine and Rachel. Jeanine is an Iraq war veteran and the dinner coincided with the birthday of her new fiance as well. Rachel is a Virginia Tech graduate and like many, looking for a job! In fact, I thought of her during VP Nominee Paul Ryan's speech last night when he mentioned the 50% of college graduates unable to find work and living in the their parents…

On Saturday, Patch polled several prominent local Republicans and Democrats about their thoughts on Mitt Romney's selection of Wisconsin Rep. Paul Ryan for vice president.
A strong majority of Democrats think both Virginia Democrats and President Barack Obama can win their elections in November largely by running against Rep. Paul Ryan's budget plans and his proposals for Medicare, according to a weekend Northern Virginia Patch "snap poll." On Saturday morning, Mitt Romney, the presumptive Republican nominee for president, announced he had chosen Ryan as his running mate, passing over Virginia Gov. Bob McDonnell, former Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty and others presumed to be on the short list. Romney made the announcement in Norfolk and spent the day on a bus tour of Virginia, ending with a campaign event in Manassas. After the announcement, Patch sent surveys to more than 75 key Republicans and Democrats, …

Mitt Romney, who announced his selection for vice president this morning in Norfolk, will campaign in Manassas later today.
Rep. Gerry Connolly called Rep. Paul Ryan of Wisconsin, whom Mitt Romney just chose as his vice president, an “amiable radical” in a conversation with Patch on Saturday. Connolly, a Democrat representing Virginia’s 11th district, served with Rep. Paul Ryan on the House Budget Committee for two years from 2009 – 2011. “[Rep. Paul Ryan] has the least experience and he is the most radical,” Connolly said, noting Paul’s relatively young age, 42. Ryan has been a Wisconsin representative since 1999. Ryan has proposed significant cuts at the federal level in order to decrease the federal debt. Those proposals were outlined in Ryan’s “Path to Prosperity” proposal in March and included reducing individual and corporate tax rates in addition to …
