Lorton Home Upgraded, Customized by DIYers

Beyond builder's grade: Couple customizes 6,000 square-foot home inside and out.

When it comes to making home improvements, there isn’t much that Bill and Lee Jones won’t tackle. When the couple bought their five-bedroom home on 9051 Swans Creek Way in 2008, the 2004 home was finished with many builder-grade features, and the landscaping was sparse. But after four years of hard work, the couple has transformed the nearly 6,000 square-foot interior from non-descript to high-end and custom, and the bare, 1-plus acre yard into lush, garden-filled grounds. And, they did it all themselves. The couple bought the three-level house primarily to have more space, both inside and out. Home On the River

Lorton home, built in 1962, offers modern amenities and panoramic Potomac views.

Some of Chris Eppard’s happiest childhood memories are of his family’s home on the Potomac River, at 6029 River Drive in Lorton.  “As a kid, my favorite place was the seawall in front of my house,” said Chris, an employee of a large security company. “I loved going there to run the little boat my dad had, a 5-horsepower jon boat [aluminum fishing boat]…. I learned to run a boat about the same time I learned to ride a bike.” As an adult, Chris lived in a house just south of Old Town with his wife, Julia, an attorney.
