Sequestration has impacted them, and more redevelopment options are needed.
The Bureau of Land Management's long-awaited decision on the Environmental Assessment for the aging stables at its The Stables At the Meadowood Special Recreation Management Area has been scrapped. The decision to seek alternative development options was revealed to the public Monday morning at the office of Mount Vernon District Supervisor Gerry Hyland, who hosted U.S. Rep. Jim Moran (D-8th), BLM executives, barn manager Allison Mills and barn supporters. "We've looked at the coming fiscal reality and determined that those three options in the EA (Environmental Assessment) are not enough," said BLM spokesman Bob Gillcash. "Hopefully we are no longer contained to option A, B or C. We're really looking for D, E, F and G, maybe H. We want …

What will it mean for the businesses at the barn?
The Bureau of Land Management has extended the wait on its decision on the Environmental Assessment of the stables at the Meadowood Special Recreation Management Area in Lorton until the effects are known of the federal sequester on the Department of the Interior's budget. The Interior's Bureau of Land Management owns the barn, and the funds set aside for barn repair are being reviewed. "Are those funds set aside or do they remain intact and inviolate for moving them for some other purpose?" said Mount Vernon District Supervisor Gerry Hyland to Patch. "I hold my breath, because a good part of that money has been put in by people who have boarded their horses there." Are you following us on Facebook and Twitter? You Should. Virginia …

Time for some chow.
Patch was just in time for dinner at the Meadowood Barn on Thursday, Dec. 6. The bell rang at around 3:30 p.m., and the 16 horses that live at the barn responded by walking back to their stalls unaided to wait for their evening meal. Fate of Barn/Boarding Remain Questionable The future of the Meadowood Barn remains questionable, and the Bureau of Land Management, which owns the facility, is expected to make a formal decision in January on the Environmental Assessment of the aging structure. Barn manager Allison Mills is now down another horse (it went to a training facility and was not allowed to come back, she said), and due to her contract with BLM, she is unable to increase the number of horses boarded beyond 15. The development …

What will happen to the three businesses at the barn during renovation?
Today is the deadline for public comments on the Bureau of Land Management's Environmental Assessment of The Stables at Meadowood. The deadline was extended twice because of a reported glitch on the BLM website that kept people from commenting. The website is still experiencing problems, said Boarder Anna Gibson, who feels that BLM will shut the barn down instead of keep horses in the structure during reconstruction. BLM did not return a call from Patch on Monday. "I you look at the report, they don't say what repairs they are going to do," Gibson said. "They don't give any timeline, they don't have any economic analysis of removing boarders, who are the sole source of maintaining revenue on the land, and they also don't say that the …

Resolution approved Tuesday night says allowing animals to stay on-site is an "industry standard."
The South County Federation unanimously passed a resolution Tuesday that calls on the Bureau of Land Management to allow horses to remain at its barn at during its long-awaited renovation. The Federation, which represents 10,000 residents of southeast Fairfax County, unanimously passed the resolution, which will be sent to BLM as a comment on their Environmental Assessment of the structure. It is widely believed that three independently-owned businesses at the barn will fail if the horses are removed from the structure at Lorton's Meadowood Special Recreation Management Area. The Federation, which met at South County Secondary School for its monthly meeting Tuesday night, defended the barn in the resolution as an "important community …

The Bureau of Land Management is accepting comments from the public through July 3.
The deadline for public comment on the Bureau of Land Management's Environmental Assessment of the aging barn at the Meadowood Special Recreation Management Area has been extended to July 3. Click here to comment on BLM's Environmental Assessment, or email comments to BLM_ES_Meadowood_Comments@blm.gov. You may read the entire environmental assessment report here (pdf download). The assessment offers three main options: "The Environmental Assessment describes a proposed action to renovate the Meadowood Barn structure within its existing footprint and use, to the extent possible, existing framing and structural components. Alternative actions include immediate closure and demolition of the structure, or no action whatsoever," according to …

Thank you South County Federation for amplifying what so many citizens of the area have already said on the public record. And thank you Lorton Patch! The coverage the Patch is providing on this and so many other local issues is keeping us on top of the issues that will drive the future of Lorton.   more ›
