Lorton Girl Burned in Gasoline Fire Discharged from Hospital

Mary Cox returns to Lorton from Shriner's Hospital in Boston.

Lorton resident Mary Cox, 7, returned home to Lorton from Boston's Shriner's Hospital, where she was recovering from burns suffered Oct. 20 in a gasoline fire at her home in Lorton. Mary was discharged from Shriner's Hospital for Children in Boston Monday and she returned home Tuesday. "She's doing really well," said Jennifer Phelan, her aunt, in an e-mail to Patch. "She's had numerous skin grafts and all are healing nicely. She will continue her physical therapy and follow-up medical care here in the local area. She will return to school hopefully in the next few weeks." Friends, family, neighbors and classmates from Mary's school, Gunston Elementary, donated funds on a Web site set up to help Mary's parents travel from Lorton to Boston …

Online Fundraiser Set Up for Lorton Girl Burned in Fire

Seven-year old transported to burn unit in Boston.

An online fundraising page has been set up to offset costs associated with the recovery for burn victim Mary Cox, 7, of Lorton. Mary, identified on the online fundraiser, was burned Sunday at her home in a gasoline fire. The online fundraiser was set up for Mary by her aunt, identified online as Jennifer Phelan. The girl sustained second and third-degree burns over more than 40 percent of her body, according to the Web site. Mary was transported Sunday to Shriner's Hospital for Children in Boston. She is in a medically induced coma on a breathing machine and listed in critical condition, according to the site. Any donations made will help offset the travel costs for her parents, Steve and Pamela, as well as out-of-pocket medical expenses, …
