Virginia Snow Storm 2013: Lorton Weather, Closings, Traffic

UPDATE 5 p.m.:  Due to inclement weather, all education classes and workshops at the Workhouse are cancelled today, Wednesday. Galleries and studio buildings are closed to the public today. UPDATE 12:20 p.m.: From the Fairfax County Park Authority: Due to the snowstorm, all park facilities will be closed from Noon today until 10 a.m. Thursday. This includes RECenters, synthetic turf fields, and all other park facilities.  UPDATE 12:10 p.m. Fairfax County Government offices and services will close at Noon Wednesday. Lorton Weather: Springlike Temperatures Monday, Tuesday

22079 and the surrounding areas will see pleasantly warm temperatures early in the week.

The calendar says December, but springlike temperatures will warm up Lorton early this week. Northern Virginia will see temperatures reaching the mid-to-upper 60s at the start of the week, according to the National Weather Service before colder temperatures return. Temperatures Monday and Tuesday are expected to reach 67 degrees, 20 degrees warmer than the average high of 47 degrees. By Wednesday, temperatures will start to descend, hitting 57 degrees for a high. By Thursday, it'll be time to bundle up, with highs reaching 47 degrees. The week will be partly cloudy, with the sunniest day forecast to be Thursday. Temperatures will start to climb again, getting into the 50s on Friday and Saturday. Thunderstorms Could Strike Area Sunday Afternoon

National Weather Service forecasts possible storms after 3 p.m.

While Lorton will get some relief from the heat Sunday as temperatures drop back into the 90s, afternoon thunderstorms could bring strong storms, wind and hail to the area after 3 p.m. The National Weather Service predicts Sunday will begin partly sunny with a high near 97 and a heat index value as high as 105. Around 3 p.m., the beginning of a cold front pushing southward across the Mid-Atlantic will bring showers and thunderstorms, with a possibility of damaging wind and hail, NWS said. Some areas will see only a tenth of an inch of rainfall; in areas with thunderstorms, however, that amount will be greater. What You Need to Know About the Storm Aftermath in Lorton

How did you fare after Friday's storm?

Power is still out for thousands across the region, and a majority of Mason Neck is still in the dark after Friday's derecho. Fallen limbs have cut power at three locations along Gunston Road, stripping power from hundreds of homes, Mason Neck State Park and Gunston Hall Plantation (which remains closed). Virginia Power called my neighbor to announce that he had power. He didn't, so he called me,I did, but mine is a generator (Thank God) So he called VA PWR and told them no power. Short on small talk? Well, it's gonna be 100-plus degrees this weekend, again, which is all anyone's gonna be talking about the next couple of days. The National Weather Service has issued an "Excessive Heat Watch" for Friday, and the heat index could get to 110 degrees on Saturday or Sunday.   So, what are you going to do about it? Patch has a few ideas and locations for staying cool. First, the Forecast: Hot!  Late June will feel like late August this weekend as temperatures reach the upper 90s Thursday through Monday. Winter's Revenge: Freeze Advisory Issued for Tuesday Morning

Brrrrr! Get ready for some unseasonably cold weather.

Don't put away that winter coat just yet. The National Weather Service has issued a freeze warning in Lorton and most of the DC metro area from 3 a.m. to 9 a.m. Tuesday. Temperatures are expected to be in the upper 20s to low 30s.  "Unseasonably cold air is already pouring into the Northeast," according to the Capital Weather Gang. "Temperatures have fallen back into the 40s in much of Pennsylvania and 30s in New York State. Locations in northern Maine that were around 80 last Thursday are now only in the 20s!"  Be careful with that spring garden.
