Photos of the Day: The First Day At School

Lorton Station Elementary was very busy today.

Busy: That's how you'd describe Lorton Station Elementary School on Tuesday, September 6. It's the day after Labor Day and you know what that means - the first day of school. So much for sleeping late, eating junk food and playing video games. Lorton Station Elementary, which opened in 2003, is one of 139 elementary schools in Fairfax County and has more than 850 students.      Enjoy the pictures!

SCA Food Drive Benefits LCAC

Second one this year

The Student Council Association (SCA) at Lorton Station Elementary School recently conducted a food drive to add to the coffers of the Lorton Community Action Center (LCAC). The students brought in a total of 1,359 pounds of canned food, diapers, shampoo and so forth to help fill up the shelves of the new food pantry in the LCAC. Mrs. Engelbrektsson’s fourth grade class contributed over 300 items to win an ice cream party. This is the second food drive this year that was sponsored by the SCA at Lorton Station for a grand total of 3,645 pounds of donated food. In addition, the SCA collected and donated nearly 600 hats, scarves, gloves and mittens in December. A hearty thank you to the kids at Lorton Station for making Lorton a little bit …

Whiz Kid - Chloe Baker

History Day Statewide champ

This week's Whiz Kid is Lorton Station Elementary School sixth-grader Chloe Baker. Last month, Chloe earned first place in the statewide History Day competition. She won in the Junior Individual Documentary for her project, “The Alien and Sedition Acts:  An Open Violation.” Congratulations Chloe!

Whiz Kids of the Week: History Day Winners From Lorton Station ES

The nine students advance to regional competition

This week's Whiz Kid is actually a group of nine kids from Lorton Station Elementary School (LSES). Here are the details: National History Day took place on February 24 and as a result of their performance at the event there will be nine students from LSESS advancing to regional competition. Students presented via exhibits, documentaries, performances and websites. The presentations were judged on historical quality, balanced research, and clarity of presentation.  This year’s theme was “Debate and Diplomacy in History: Successes, Failures, and Consequences.”  Students presented arguments from both sides of historical debates in their projects. Lorton Station Elementary Students Continue Tradition of Community Service

Youngsters make helping their neighbors cool

Updated Wednesday 10:15 a.m.: The final tally is in. Students collected an amazing 2,512 pounds of food, which is more than double last year's impressive total of 1,247 pounds. -------------- The students at Lorton Station Elementary School have once again stepped up to help their community. After collecting more than 1,200 pounds of food last year this year the students are looking to top themselves. While the final weight total is still being tallied,what is known for sure is that 2,286 items were collected in just two weeks. Mrs. Giovinazo's fifth-grade class won themselves a popcorn party by bringing in 248 items, tops in the upper elementary classes. Mrs. Hanscom's and Mr. Murphy's classes were close behind with 218 and 211 …

Coffee, books and broadcast journalism

Monday There will be a coffee meeting for parents of sophomores at South County Secondary School. The event will be held in the cafeteria from 7p.m. to 8:30 p.m. It's New Parent Night at Laurel Hill Elementary School. Parents of students new to Laurel Hill ES are invited to attend, starting at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday The Freshman Parents have their coffee night on Tuesday. It also begins at 7 p.m. and runs to 8:30 p.m. It will be held in the school cafeteria. Wednesday Parents of students in Broadcast Journalism are invited to attend a meeting in room D108 at 7 p.m. Information about goals, trips, fundraising and parent support will be discussed. Laurel Hill Elementary has a Book Fair/Family Night scheduled to operate from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. …
