Photo of the Day: Dinner Time at the Meadowood Barn

Time for some chow.

Patch was just in time for dinner at the Meadowood Barn on Thursday, Dec. 6. The bell rang at around 3:30 p.m., and the 16 horses that live at the barn responded by walking back to their stalls unaided to wait for their evening meal. Fate of Barn/Boarding Remain Questionable The future of the Meadowood Barn remains questionable, and the Bureau of Land Management, which owns the facility, is expected to make a formal decision in January on the Environmental Assessment of the aging structure. Barn manager Allison Mills is now down another horse (it went to a training facility and was not allowed to come back, she said), and due to her contract with BLM, she is unable to increase the number of horses boarded beyond 15.  The development …

Task Force Recommends Appointment of Equestrian Coordinator

An eight-member task force presented its recommendations to the Board of Supervisors on Tuesday.

The Fairfax County Ad Hoc Equestrian Task Force (ETF) proposed hiring an equestrian coordinator and establishing an Equestrian Advisory Committee when it presented its recommendations to the Board of Supervisors on Tuesday, following a year of meetings.  The task force proposed that officials appoint an equestrian coordinator to act as an ambassador between equestrians and the county. "The equestrian coordinator is really the lynchpin that we felt would help to achieve our goals," said Breeana Bornhorst, chair of the Equestrian Task Force. She and the task force also recommended that the county establish an Equestrian Advisory Committee to assist the coordinator, as well as review existing county zoning laws and permitting processes to …

If the position ends up paying for itself through increased revenue, increased jobs, increased diversity (including programs for the disabled to work with horses) then it should be established.   more ›

Dreams Come True at Meadowood

Ten years ago she'd heard about the Bureau of Land Management's Wild Horse and Burro Program, and decided then she'd one day adopt a Mustang. "I fell in love with the Mustang breed and became interested in gentling one of them," she said. Mustang is the breed name used for wild horses of the North American west. Standing in front of the pen containing #1771, the gelding she'd chosen to adopt, Gould couldn't help smiling. "I chose this one based on his confirmation and personality," she said. "He's been moving around the enclosure generally interested in what's going on, and acting even tempered with the other horses." Gould was one of about 20 people who adopted horses this …
