Open Houses at Lorton Schools

Are you ready for school? Get out your calendar, because the bell is about to ring!

School is nearly back in session. Are you ready? Starting this month, Lorton schools will hold open houses for parents and students. You'll find that all Fairfax County Public Schools do these sorts of things - mostly to prepare everyone for the realities of the coming school year.  School officially starts on Sept. 4. Elementary, middle and high school open houses in Lorton  4:30-5:30 pm (Last names A-M) 6-7 pm (Last names N-Z) 3:30-4:15 p.m. (Last names A-M) 4:15-5 p.m. (Last names N-Z) 2-3 p.m. 8:15-10:15 a.m. (For students and parents)   *A meeting for Kindergarten parents will be held from 4-4:30 p.m. during the Open House. ** Formally known as the Mustang Round-up, this event allows no parents, and students spend five minutes at each…

Saturday was a big day for volunteers on Mason Neck. At Meadowood Recreation Area Boy Scout Vincent Kolakowski helped coordinate a tree planting and land reclamation event for his Eagle Scout project. With the help of the Friends of Meadowood, Mason Neck Lions Club, The Bureau of Land Management and Fairfax ReLeaf, volunteers were organized to help dig holes and plant trees.  Trees were planted in accordance to their tolerance to different soil textures, wetlands, shade and other natural conditions, and included Bald Cypress, Silky Dogwood, Common Persimmon and American Hazelnut, to name a few. Just north of Meadowood a group of Gunston Elementary School sixth-graders gathered in front of the school to wash cars. They ended up raising $700…

Meadowood-Gunston Elementary Educational Trail Now Open

Partnership between BLM-ES and FCPS

Earlier today a 1,240 foot long trail was dedicated in a ribbon-cutting ceremony behind Gunston Elementary School. The trail connects to the trail system of the Meadowood Special Recreation Area. The trail is a result of partnership between the Bureau of Land Management-Eastern States, which manages Meadowood, and Fairfax County Public Schools. Following a ribbon-cutting, about two dozen volunteers braved cold April weather to help tidy up the area around the trail now that it is open to the public. The Mason Neck Lions provided snacks and refreshments and donations were accepted by the Lorton Community Action Center. Gunston ES Teacher Loved Her Job

Unexpected passing leaves a void among loved ones

When Ayanna Stewart was in tenth grade at Paul VI High School in Haddonfield, N.J., when she took one of those career aptitude tests that high school students have come to dread. When the results advised her to become a teacher she thought it was the last thing she would ever do for a living. When informed of her decision, her mother, Delois, told her, "Ayanna you already are a teacher." Young Ayanna had a penchant for the details. "Organize, organize, organize. That was what she liked to do. And she was really good at it," Delois Stewart-Heath says about her daughter now. Ayanna agreed and began charting a course for a career in education.
