FCPD provided information about the new police cruisers during the recent CAC meeting at Franconia District Police Station.
Fairfax County police officers are saying farewell to their old cruisers as the department purchases 127 Ford Police Interceptor sedans and utility vehicles in FY2013. Retired Lieutenant Chalrie Bond — who is now the director of the logistics and property division for the department — conducted a presentation during Wednesday night's Citizen Advisory Committee meeting. Bond said Ford Motor Vehicles recently discontinued the Crown Victoria Police Interceptors. The 2007 model was the last of its kind. FCPD has 1,500 vehicles — 762 which are assigned to eight stations, and Franconia District Police Station has 109 of those vehicles alone, Bond said. Thompson faces charges for arson and assault.
The preliminary court date for Horace Thompson, the 25-year-old suspect in the February explosion at the Sub Shop restaurant in Lorton, has been continued to July 31. Thompson has been declared by Fairfax County Police as an "associate" of Sub Shop owner Lawrence Reese. Reese and Thompson were both injured by the blast, which came from inside the sandwich shop, located at 9504 Richmond Hwy., at around 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 6. Thompson, whose hands and face were burned, is charged with arson of an occupied building and assault. Investigators determined that the explosion was caused by gasoline and occurred inside the shop near a bathroom. It was a busy week for Fairfax County Police.
Fairfax County Police last week determined that a series of recent assaults in Lorton may be the work of a 'copycat groper'. In the most recent incident in Lorton, a 31-year-old woman was approached from behind at around 10:45 a.m. April 10, while walking near Timarand Court and Timarand Drive. The suspect touched the victim inappropriately, then fled and was not located by officers. The victim was not injured. Captain Jim Baumstark and First Lieutenant William Jacoby discussed crime in the Franconia District during Wednesday night's CAC meeting.
While discussing crime in the Kingstowne and Franconia area Wednesday night at the Citizen Advisory Committee (CAC) meeting, Captain Jim Baumstark — Franconia District Police Station commander — explained that recent assaults in Lorton may be the work of a possible "copycat serial groper." Like the suspect(s) in the Springfield assaults, the suspect in the multiple assaults in Lorton has not been apprehended. The Springfield area has seen a string of 24 unsolved assaults by a serial groper or possibly two suspects that began in September. The latest took place in late March in Kingstowne. The boy was found in a hotel in Las Vegas with his mother, who has been arrested and is being held as a fugitive from justice.
Fairfax County Police announced Wednesday that Cameron Serafin, the Fairfax County boy who has been missing since April 7, has been found safe and his mother Rebecca has been arrested. Investigators had been looking for Rebecca Serafin and her 5-year-old son since she did not return the boy to his father's home in Great Falls as scheduled. “Following information they developed after viewing the video, LVPD [Las Vegas Police Department] detectives located Cameron and Rebecca Serafin at another hotel close by,” according to the Fairfax County Police Department release. “Cameron is safe and in good condition. Fairfax County Police say that Cameron Serafin, the Fairfax County boy who has been missing since April 7, has been seen with his mother in Las Vegas. Investigators have been looking for the mother and her 5-year-old son since Rebecca Serafin did not return the boy to his father's home in Great Falls as scheduled. Detectives say Rebecca and Cameron Serafin were seen in the baggage claim area at McCarran International Airport in Las Vegas, Nevada on Thursday, April 11, around 10 p.m., after arriving on a Southwest Airlines flight from Birmingham, Ala. No one was arrested in the incident.
A 53-year-old man was struck in the head by another man at a business in the 9400 block of Lorton Market Street on the evening of Saturday, April 13. At around 9:50 p.m., the victim was confronted by another man, words were exchanged, and the suspect struck the victim in the head. The victim was not seriously injured and the suspect was escorted from the scene. The indicent was documented in the Fairfax County daily incident report. There was no word of an arrest in the case.
