Residents, Employees Weigh In On FCPS Superintendent Search

The next superintendent of the Fairfax County Public School system probably won't be shy.

"Courageous," "knowledgable," "engaging." The conversation about filling the shoes of retiring Fairfax County Public Schools Superintendent Jack D. Dale formally began Monday night at the South County High School cafeteria. "I think we need a superintendent who has worked in a diverse community and who is sensitive to all ethnic groups," said Shirley Ginwright, newly elected president of the Fairfax County NAACP, at the meeting, which had five people in attendance. South County Middle School Opens Doors

The home of the Mustangs is now open for business.

On Tuesday morning, 1,037 South County Middle School seventh and eighth graders walked into a new era.  Seventh-grader Jaelize Gomez, 12, was anxious before entering the school. "I'm excited and nervous," Gomez said to Patch. "It's a new school, it's huge. I'm looking forward to drama, but I'm nervous about the homework. Sometimes it can take me an hour-and-a-half to finish."  Fairfax County School Board member Dan Storck, who represents the Mount Vernon District, was also on-hand when school opened. South County Middle School Offers 'Sneak Peek' Before School Starts

Are you ready for school? These events could help you out.

Summer is almost over, and the brand new South County Middle School is opening its doors this week to students and parents alike.  Is someone you know going to be attending South County Middle School? They'll want to check out these three events this month: The Mustang Round-up  Seventh Grade Locker Night For some kids, this will be their first experience with a locker. "Students have five minutes between classes, and combination lockers can add some stress at first," said Stokes.
