Celebrating Virginia's penchant for purchasing personalized plates
The last time you were waiting in traffic on Route 1 did you happen to take a look around at other cars' license plates? If it seemed to you like there were more personalized (or vanity) plates, especially compared to other places you've been, then you are very perceptive. Because Virginia, in fact, has the highest percentage of personalized plates of any state in the country. According to Melanie Stokes of the Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles 13.3% of all plates in the Old Dominion are personalized, or roughly one in seven.
