Accurate portrayals of Native American culture and history
The American Indian Library Association says that not all books with Native American characters, stories or information are good picks. In their resource I is for Inclusion, Naomi Caldwell, Gabriella Kaye and Lisa Mitten write that, "There are plenty of "good" books -- well-written, exciting, from respected authors, much-loved by their readers, with well-developed characters -- that are inaccurate, stereotypical, fanciful, or just plain dehumanizing in their depiction of the Native characters." Curriculum writers Guy Jones and Sally Moomaw say that, "... with the possible exception of classroom visits by American Indian people, excellent children's literature is the most effective way to counter deeply held stereotypes and help children…

October 17 - 23 Events at Lorton Library
Lorton Library will celebrate Teen Read Week with free gifts and special events Monday, October 18 - Saturday, October 23. On Wednesday, October 20, Officer Jim Reid of the Fairfax County Police Department will present Crime Scene Investigation. Teens will test their skills of observation as Officer Reid demonstrates "hands-on" investigation techniques. The program is open to students in grades 7 to 12. It will be held at Lorton Library from 4 to 5 p.m. Each teen who comes to the library during the week and completes a book recommendation will receive a free gift. What should I read? If you like "The Guardians of Ga'Hoole," try these, too
Kids love books in series, and Hollywood has caught on. This weekend Warner Brothers will release in 3D animation the movie version of Kathryn Lasky's The Guardians of Ga'Hoole. The film, Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga'Hoole, is based on the first three books in the 15 book series about Soren, Gylfie, Twilight and Digger, four owls who've joined forces to fight a fierce enemy. Whenever the movie version of a book is released, library shelves are emptied of the title.
