Remembering Ray Rainwater

He loved to be busy.

Ray Rainwater, the owner of the Rainwater Concrete Debris Landfill in Lorton, died of heart failure on Jan. 5 at age 85. He was surrounded by his family at his home on Mason Neck.  His widow Linda Rainwater is managing, and she smiles generously as visions of her husband pass through her mind. "The last words that he said… He called out my name and the kids came and got me, and he said 'Linda.' He hadn't moved for hours, but he looked up in a very controlled way," she said, "and he lifted up his left arm and put it on my shoulder and walked it underneath my hair, and he said, 'Love,' and that was his last word. It was such a beautiful, beautiful thing." The story of Ray and Linda Rainwater is about true love, and to her, he was a force of …

Moran: Northern Virginia 'Best Place' For FBI Headquarters

Officials from Fairfax, Loudoun, Prince William and Stafford counties met in Arlington to discuss six potential sites Thursday.

Local, state and Congressional leaders met Thursday in Arlington to discuss six potential sites for a new FBI headquarters and to present a unified front in their commitment to landing the new federal complex somewhere in Northern Virginia. Democratic U.S. Rep. Jim Moran, who called the meeting, said leaders from Fairfax, Loudoun, Prince William and Stafford counties had a "singular focus" in bringing the FBI headquarters to the Old Dominion. "We're all committed to finding a home for the FBI in the commonwealth of Virginia," Moran said during a news conference following the meeting. "We are all going to promote Virginia as the best place for this relocation." Arlington's role was simply as host. It has not put forth any potential sites …

The last thing Northern Virginia needs is more police (an agency like the FBI would require more security) and more traffic. Let Maryland get this one. They deserve it. We already have the CIA, the Pentagon, Ft. Belvoir, and a bunch of other stuff. Do we really need the FBI in a region that has the 2nd worst traffic, with only Los Angeles being the next one?   more ›

America Loses Neil Armstrong, First Man to Walk on the Moon

Tell us your thoughts on the death of the man who took those historic first steps.

His family called him "a reluctant American hero," who was just doing his job. But Neil A. Armstrong, who died Saturday in Cincinnati at age 82 of complications from heart bypass surgery, was a hero. He was just shy of his 39th birthday when he lumbered down the ladder from the Apollo 11 spacecraft and stepped onto the stark lunar landscape on July 20, 1969. "That's one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind," he said, as Americans around the country watched in awe at the live footage from dark space, so far away. Local residents can explore that historic moment at the National Air and Space Museum in Dulles and in D.C. That step fulfilled a challenge President John F. Kennedy issued in the early 1960s —to put a man on the moon by …

A soldier originally from Springfield, Va. was killed in a helicopter crash in Afghanistan, according to a Pentagon release. Chief Warrant Officer 5 John C. Pratt was 51 years old. He died over the weekend in Kabul from injuries he received during the crash. Pratt was in an AH-64 Apache helicopter made by Boeing. He was a driving force in Fairfax County

Lifelong community leader Stephen Hartwell died peacefully at age 96 on Dec. 14, at his home, Riversedge, at Mt. Vernon, Virginia. Mr. Hartwell, a former chair of the Fairfax County Planning Commission, was conceived in Paris during World War 1 and was born in Philadelphia, PA on April 15, 1915.  "He was a kind, generous and wonderful man, and he will be dearly missed," said Mr. Hartwell's son, Rob. "One thing that happened this evening that I have never witnessed before, at about the time he passed away, was a flock of 14 Bald Eagles flying together, and thought it was an omen of some kind. They were flying through my back yard on course directly for his house, albeit a few miles away."  Mr. Hartwell graduated from the Lafayette College …
