He loved to be busy.
Ray Rainwater, the owner of the Rainwater Concrete Debris Landfill in Lorton, died of heart failure on Jan. 5 at age 85. He was surrounded by his family at his home on Mason Neck. His widow Linda Rainwater is managing, and she smiles generously as visions of her husband pass through her mind. "The last words that he said… He called out my name and the kids came and got me, and he said 'Linda.' He hadn't moved for hours, but he looked up in a very controlled way," she said, "and he lifted up his left arm and put it on my shoulder and walked it underneath my hair, and he said, 'Love,' and that was his last word. Officials from Fairfax, Loudoun, Prince William and Stafford counties met in Arlington to discuss six potential sites Thursday.
Local, state and Congressional leaders met Thursday in Arlington to discuss six potential sites for a new FBI headquarters and to present a unified front in their commitment to landing the new federal complex somewhere in Northern Virginia. Democratic U.S. Rep. Jim Moran, who called the meeting, said leaders from Fairfax, Loudoun, Prince William and Stafford counties had a "singular focus" in bringing the FBI headquarters to the Old Dominion. "We're all committed to finding a home for the FBI in the commonwealth of Virginia," Moran said during a news conference following the meeting. Team leader for Chesapeake Veterinary Cardiology Associates in Springfield died Thursday in car accident to be remembered by friends and family.
Sarah Mae Jones of Woodbridge, 29, will be remembered at a gathering of Jones' family and friends at Covenant Funeral Service in Stafford from 7-9 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 12. Jones, who worked as a team leader for Chesapeake Veterinary Cardiology Associates in Springfield, died in a car crash on Interstate 95 on Thursday, Sept. 6. Jones worked for a number of years at Woodbridge Animal Hospital and was a team leader for CVCA. She is survived by her parents, Roscoe and Joan Jones of Stafford, brothers Jesse and John, grandparents Phyllis R. Davis and Donald Lee Davis and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins. Lyons, 74, gave decades to community organizations, including LCAC, Gunston Hall Plantation and the Mason Neck Citizens Association Board.
Gerald Lyons, that staunch Mason Neck advocate, untiring volunteer and friendly neighbor, died on Thursday, Aug. 16. He was 74. "He was a dear," said Sallie Lyons, of her husband of 42 years. "He loved to do his art and share his ideas with people. He wasn't happy if he wasn't doing something artistic for a good reason." Lyons, a talented graphic designer with a wickedly sharp wit, passed away after suffering from a stroke on Aug. 10. "Jerry", as his friends called him, was born on Feb. 1, 1938, in Springfield, IL. He studied architecture at Southern Illinois University and Washington University in St. Louis, before he was drafted into the U.S. Army in 1961. John C. Pratt, from Springfield, died from injuries sustained in a helicopter crash.
A soldier originally from Springfield, Va. was killed in a helicopter crash in Afghanistan, according to a Pentagon release. Chief Warrant Officer 5 John C. Pratt was 51 years old. He died over the weekend in Kabul from injuries he received during the crash. Pratt was in an AH-64 Apache helicopter made by Boeing. The cause of the crash is still under investigation, but it does not appear enemy fire was a factor. Another soldier, 26-year-old Capt. John R. Brainard from Maine, was also killed. More than 1,850 people have died in the conflict in Afghanistan since it began. According to the U.S. casualties database run by icasualties.org, 134 of those who have died are from Virginia. An additional 679 Virginia natives have been injured.

McCutcheon, 95, served as the Mount Vernon commissioner on the Fairfax County Park Authority Board until 2010.
Gil McCutcheon, 95, passed away on Wednesday night. McCutcheon served as the Mount Vernon commissioner on the Fairfax County Park Authority Board for 18 years and was an instrumental part of many local projects, including the acquisition and planning of Laurel Hill. Born in Alton, Illinois, McCutcheon studied engineering at the Virginia Military Institute. He received a degree in public administration from UNC-Chapel Hill and also studied personnel administration and labor relations at Columbia University. He has been a resident of Fairfax County for almost 60 years. He worked as a collective bargaining agent for the State of New Jersey and went on to work for the Commission for Conciliation at the U.S. Department of Labor; Federal …

Lifelong community leader Stephen Hartwell died peacefully at age 96 on Dec. 14, at his home, Riversedge, at Mt. Vernon, Virginia. Mr. Hartwell, a former chair of the Fairfax County Planning Commission, was conceived in Paris during World War 1 and was born in Philadelphia, PA on April 15, 1915. "He was a kind, generous and wonderful man, and he will be dearly missed," said Mr. Hartwell's son, Rob. "One thing that happened this evening that I have never witnessed before, at about the time he passed away, was a flock of 14 Bald Eagles flying together, and thought it was an omen of some kind. The last thing Northern Virginia needs is more police (an agency like the FBI would require more security) and more traffic. Let Maryland get this one. They deserve it. We already have the CIA, the Pentagon, Ft. Belvoir, and a bunch of other stuff. Do we really need the FBI in a region that has the 2nd worst traffic, with only Los Angeles being the next one? more ›
