Scouts Stock New LCAC Food Pantry

In preparation for grand opening next month

While most high school students are spending Spring Break putting their feet up and getting started on their tans, Lake Braddock sophomore Michael Romans was giving back to his community.

As a member of Scout Troop 1518 in Springfield, Romans was in search of a volunteer project that would help him achieve Eagle Scout status. He got in touch with Kathleen Noone, the Director of Human Resources at Lorton Community Action Center (LCAC) and she informed Michael about the that had recently been installed. He took it from there.

“You have to plan your own project and (the LCAC staff) were really helpful,” Michael said.

So, on Monday and Tuesday, with the help of 15 friends, family and fellow Scouts, Michael built 60 shelves in the new pantry. Getting the shelves into the pantry was no small task, as each one came in a box weighing 190 pounds each. Michael’s team also transferred food out of the old pantry and into the new one. It was exhausting, but meaningful work that lasted all day.

Karlene Webster, who is the Food Pantry Manager at LCAC, is just one of many who is grateful for Michael’s efforts and with the scouts as a whole.

“The scouts have been wonderful for us,” Webster said. “They have helped us with so many different projects.”

The LCAC is on track to have a ribbon cutting on May 11, thanks to the efforts of volunteers like Michael Romans.
