(Editor's note: This is the first in a series of weekly columns by Linda Patterson on the needs of local residents experiencing hard times.)
The Lorton area is currently 3.5 percent of the population in Fairfax County. Almost 29 percent of Lorton households have a high school diploma or less, versus 22 percent for Fairfax County as a whole. This lack of education in more than a quarter of South County households means less income and struggling to make ends meet. This is where the steps in - when unexpected expenses stretch an already tight budget.
Since I became the LCAC Executive Director in January, I've met a lot of folks who have asked me to describe what we do. So, as part of a new weekly column with Lorton Patch, I will talk about the needs of those we serve and the impacts on our community.

What We Do
The LCAC is a nonprofit that serves the southern portion of Fairfax County in ZIP codes 22079, 22122 and 22060 (Lorton, Newington and Fort Belvoir). Our goal is to break the cycle of poverty in southeast Fairfax County.

We have seven core programs:
- Emergency food, clothing, household and furniture assistance
- Emergency housing and utility assistance
- Tutoring for elementary children
- ESL classes
- Pro-Bono legal services
- Nutrition classes
- Seasonal events (Back to School, Thanksgiving and holiday food baskets)
The LCAC was established in 1975 as the LCIC (Lorton Community Information Center), with volunteers connecting folks in Lorton with services, eliminating the barrier that is created when you are in crisis and have no idea where to turn. Over time, LCAC refined its mission and became “dedicated to enhancing the quality of life in the community through individual and family services, community programs, and partnerships with other organizations.”

Here is an immediate way to assist area families: On Saturday, March 31, at the Lorton Valley Giant, a local mom and daughter are sponsoring a food drive (10 a.m. to 2 p.m.) to benefit LCAC! Consider stopping by and purchasing some rice, canned fruit or canned mixed veggies for the more than 160 families LCAC assists each week through our pantry. I continue to be amazed at the generosity of this community. Thanks for helping our neighbors in need.
