Potomac Watershed Cleanup at Pohick Bay Is in the Bag

23rd annual draws big turnout despite clouds and cold

Yesterday throughout the region, volunteers gathered for the 23rd Annual River Watershed Cleanup. Sites in and around Lorton were at Hallowing Point on Mason Neck, the Potomac River National Wildlife Refuge in Occoquan and Pohick Bay Regional Park. The event was organized by the Alice Ferguson Foundation.

In total, this year’s effort brought out 2,370 volunteers to 95 sites in some gloomy April weather. They trashed a total of 52.3875 tons of garbage including 372 tires, 51,500 beverage containers and 20,897 cigarette butts. Those numbers should change and can be tracked here.

Among those helping out were 136 volunteers at Pohick Bay Regional Park, comprised primarily from Scouts throughout the area including (pictured) Boy Scout Troop 1965 out of Burke and Brownie Troop 233 from Springfield.
