A tree planting at Meadowood and a car wash at Gunston Elementary

Saturday was a big day for volunteers on Mason Neck.

At Meadowood Recreation Area Boy Scout Vincent Kolakowski helped coordinate a tree planting and land reclamation event for his Eagle Scout project. With the help of the Friends of Meadowood, Mason Neck Lions Club, The Bureau of Land ManagementΒ and Fairfax ReLeaf, volunteers were organized to help dig holes and plant trees.Β

Trees were planted in accordance to their tolerance to different soil textures, wetlands, shade and other natural conditions, and included Bald Cypress, Silky Dogwood, Common Persimmon and American Hazelnut, to name a few.

Just north of Meadowood a group of Gunston Elementary School sixth-graders gathered in front of the school to wash cars. They ended up raising $700 for their year-end activity fund, but as one teacher put it, they mut first get through SOLs!
