Laurel Hill Residents Want a Community Garden

A group of Laurel Hill residents want to install a community garden along Furnace Rd. in Lorton.

"I grew up in southwest Alabama, and the fruit and vegetables at local markets aren't the same quality that I enjoyed as a child," said John Glover, a Laurel Hill resident leading the effort.

Glover gained support for the initiative by sending out a post on the Laurel Hill community message board. More than a dozen neighbors responded, and representatives of the yet-to-be-named group recently met with Fairfax County Park Authority officials to discuss possibilities.

The potential site for the garden is across from Lorton's Covanta waste-to-energy plant along Furnace Road.

"Fairfax County has limited resources to have a person administer a garden site and they have no plans to add community gardens in the county," said Glover. "So, we're just getting organized to make that group, which has no official name yet."

Glover and his neighbors will have tables at the Sunday farmers' market at Lorton Station Town Center and at Thursday's farmers' market at the Workhouse Arts Center.
