The Mark of Zorro: SNATCH

I didn't have any specific reason on chosing to review this movie. I just watched and thought that I should. Why not?

Guy Ritchie has never failed to disappoint me yet. Now including Snatch I have seen 6 out of his 7 feature films and all of them have been good. Some of them were even great. Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels was excellent, Sherlock Holmes was great in my eyes and now we have Snatch which I am mentally adding to the great Guy Ritchie movies list. The guy seizes to amaze.

As you could have already guessed Guy Ritchie wrote and directed Snatch, which is his second film. This film was great because of his genius contributions to his film. Everything that is smart, gory, funny or just plain awesome is a direct result of Guy Ritchie's uniquely unhollywood direction and writing styles. He takes hardcore action and witty comedy (as he did in his first film Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels) and marries them beautifully to create memorable films that Hollywood could never make even if they tried (Hollywood doesn't TRY very often anyway).

Alright so Snatch follows a plethora of outlandish and unique characters, including a gypsy boxer (Brad Pitt), a Russian gangster (Rade Serbedzija), unscrupulous boxing promoters (Jason Statham, Stephen Graham) and many others as they all try to track down this priceless diamond.

All of these characters and the actors who played them were great and since I can't talk about them all I will just talk about the ones that I thought were the best. The best to me were the gypsy boxer Brad Pitt, the tough and sarcastic Dennis Farina and one of the boxing promoters Jason Statham.

Dennis Farina was one of the funniest in the movie. This role was perfect for this veteran character actor and it shows in this movie. He makes funny remarks a lot but still has this toughness about him. Brad Pitt was THE funniest in the movie. In this world gypsies have a hard time enunciating so the whole movie you can't tell what the heck he is saying. I know that sounds stupid but that's the joke. Jason Statham was great as well. He is not tough or that smart but just a guy trying to make it in the boxing business.

I would also like to note that this came out in 2000 which is before Brad Pitt and Jason Statham started doing more mainstream roles. In my opinion Brad Pitt and Jason Statham was much better when they were doing smaller (budget wise) but more intriguing movies. Brad Pitt was excellent in pre-2000 movies like Se7en and Fight Club and so was Jason Statham with Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels.

Aside from writing, directing and acting being great the dialogue was pure genius. This film runs mostly on its dialogue much like a Tarantino movie. The dialogue was so outrageous that you will be laughing until you cry. Not only is it outrageous it is very smartly written dialogue as well. It's not stupidly funny like a Will Ferrell movie but more intelligent funny like In Bruges (another classic British comedy by the way). I find it funny that dialogue in a crime movie is more funny than that of most comedies.

I honestly couldn't find anything wrong with this movie. Maybe for some people the story might feel complicated because of all the characters and sub-plots but it wasn't for me. This movie was fantastic. It is full of memorable moments and characters and is just a fun, outrageous adventure to go on. Snatch was smart yet silly and funny yet violent. Snatch deserves an A.
