Too Darn Hot: Few Visitors at Burke Lake Park Train and Carousel During Heatwave

The July heatwave has many spending daylight hours indoors, and the carousel and train at Burke Lake Park were nearly empty Wednesday.

"On the weekends or cooler days you'll see 60 people on the train, but gosh, we've had two or three people per ride today," said park employee Joe Diaz. "Right now it's just really slow. It baffles me why they keep us open."

The heat wasn't keeping Emily Reed, her 6-year-old son and family friends from the annual summer ritual of riding the train at Burke Lake Park.

"This is normal Virginia summer heat," said Reed.

By the way, Burke Lake Park's ice cream parlor (right next to the carousel) is open from 11 a.m. - 4 p.m. on weekdays and from 11 a.m. - 6 p.m. on weekends.

Temperatures in the 90s are expected until Saturday, according to the National Weather service.
