South County Softball Opens With WIn

SoCo also victorious in boys tennis and boys and girls soccer

The South County softball team got their season started in the right foot with a convincing 8-3 victory over Robinson.

Julia Kastner, who is headed to Temple , led things off with a homerun and the Stallions were never headed. Robinson was able to get several runners on base, but a pair of double plays by the Stallions kept them at bay.

South County travels to Centreville on Tuesday.

SOCCER

In boys soccer South County defeated Hayfield, 4-1.

Freddy Bonilla scored the lone goal for the Hawks and Vince Love excelled after stepping in for Fernando Seas, who also played well before his injury.

Hayfield plays at T.C. Williams on Tuesday. South County travels to Herndon on Thursday.

On the girls side of things, an improving Hayfield squad fell 4-2 to South County. The Hawks were unable to hold 1-0 and 2-1 leads. They’ll look to turn their strong play into a win at home against T.C. Williams on Tuesday.

Scoring for the Stallions were: Britney Kendall, Summer Petterson, Tara Dalrymple and Maddy Tettelbach.

The South County girls will try to make it two straight when they host Herndon on Thursday.

TENNIS

In tennis action, the South County boys turned back West Potomac 7-2, while the Stallion girls beat the Wolverines 6-3.

The girls’ matches were especially tight.

South County was able to overcome losses by #1 Kaitlin Reskovac and #2 Daniella Blom to get the victory. The closeness of their matches was a portent of things to come. Reskovac fell 10-8 after coming back from a large deficit and Blom lost in a tiebreaker.

Katrina Shah, Cindy Mao, Victoria Winkler and freshman Erica Smedberg all won their matches, with Smedberg’s being notable since it was her match at the varsity level. The Stallions won two of three doubles matches to clinch the overall victory.

In boys’ play South County won five of six singles matches with Spenser Bullock, Daniel Shlossman, Matt Masakayan, Jack Proctor and Adam Epstein getting the wins. The Stallions took two out of three doubles matches.

South County's tennis teams take on rival Lake Braddock on Tuesday. The boys are at home, the girls away.
