South County Soccer Trio Inks Scholarships

Longtime teammates ready to make senior season a memorable one

Yesterday a trio of senior girls soccer players from South County signed letters of intent to accept scholarships and take their talents to Division I playing fields.

While it was a momentous day for all three, it means that the longtime teammates--Liz Hodges, Caitlyn McLaughlin and Summer Peterson--won't be teammates in the fall. That's because Hodges signed with George Mason, McLaughlin with St. John's in New York and Peterson with East Tennessee State. Between travel teams and school teams the girls figure they've been playing together since they were eight or nine years old, maybe earlier.

For a time, it seemed they might all sign with George Mason, but recruiting at the Division I level has a way of changing fast. Offers have a way of changing, as do priorities. Both McLaughlin's parents are New York natives, so that made St. John's a natural choice.

In a strange and unfortunate coincidence, both Hodges and Peterson suffered torn ACL's around this time last year, which may have had an impact on their recruitment.

But the girls are healthy and excited for their senior seasons. With scholarships in hand and the strength of their friendship binding them together, they hope to lead the Stallions to a deep run in the playoffs once the season starts in the Spring.
