Lorton Sports Report - Another Late Rally Keeps SoCo Baseball Unbeaten

Hayfield baseball dominates, now 13-2

With Spring Break over and the schools back in session, the sports teams at Hayfield and South County are gearing up for the home stretch. One team, South County’s baseball team, looks to keep its undefeated season in tact.

Baseball

South County jumped out to a 5-0 early lead over Annandale thanks to homeruns by Mike Perez and Luke Bondurant. But the Atoms stormed back to score seven in the 6th and take a 7-5 lead.

But South County responded. Perez slugged another homer, this one a three-run shot to put South County back on top, 8-7 heading in to the seventh. Annandale wasn’t done however, as they pushed across a run to tie it at 8-8. But Bondurant worked a bases-loaded walk to put South County ahead for third and final time, 9-8.

The Stallions are now 13-0. They’ll have another tough one tonight when they travel to Lake Braddock.

Hayfield needed no such dramatics to defeat arch rival Edison, 13-1. Cory Spera starred at the plate and on the mound, lashing three hits and spinning a complete game with nine strikeouts. Bryan DiRosario hit another homerun, Ben Harris had three hits, while Sam Stone and Cameron Lundmark each laced a pair.

The win puts the Hawks at 13-2 on the season and they’ll take on Mount Vernon on Friday.

Softball

Hayfield shut out rival Edison 12-0 thanks to the pitching of Amber Fowler and Taylor Neuhart, who combined for a 1-hitter. Megan and Sam Perry-Shifflett each had a single, double and triple and two RBI's to lead the Hawks offensively. Hayfield is now 9-1-1 and host Washington-Lee later today.

Lacrosse

The South County boys inched a little closer to the .500 mark with their second straight win, this one over West Potomac, 14-6. Austin Gastrell was strong in goal and Luke Gladys and Kellen O'Kane also made contributions toward the victory by winning faceoffs.

The Stallions have Senior Night on Friday against West Springfield.

Hayfield also got closer to evening its record with a 19-18 win over Falls Church. Terry Yarborough led the scoring onslaught with eight goals. The Hawks take on Yorktown tomorrow.

The South County girls dropped a tough 14-12 decision to West Potomac.

Tennis

The Hayfield boys dropped a 6-3 decsion to Stuart. Allen Oronce and Ayan Khera won in singles play while Oronce and Hunter Woodall won in doubles. The Hawks host Yorktown tomorrow.

South County's boys fell 5-4 to West Springfield.
