Lorton Patch Athlete of the Week - Scott Blackstone

NOVA Classic win earns him honor

The first Athlete of the Week honor of the winter sports season goes to South County wrestler Scott Blackstone. Wrestling at 189 pounds, the senior grappler won his weight class at the NOVA classic last weekend at Fairfax High School. Blackstone picked up several pins before edging Oakton's Austin Murga in the finals, 4-2. Blackstone's performance helped South County to a third place finish in the 31-team tournament.

Blackstone was in coach Sean Anderson's doghouse at this time last year.

"My coach was ready to kick me off varsity. I cut down to 160 and that just wasn't for me, and after this tournament I moved back up to 189," he said before his championship bout. "It was just finding out what weight I should have been. I wasn't wrestling nearly to my ability. I was just so weak at that time due to all the weight-cutting."

But Blackstone looked plenty strong over the weekend. He doesn't get much time to rest as he and his fellow Stallions head to Portsmouth's Churchland High School this weekend for the Jack Craney Invitational.
