Local Sports Report: Late Inning Heroics Keep South County Unbeaten

Hayfield baseball routs Stuart; SoCo Boys Lax edges TCW

Four outs away from its first defeat of the year, South County stayed unbeaten when senior Mike Perez belted a two-run homer with two out in the sixth inning to put the Stallions on top, 3-2 over West Potomac.

Tyler Frazier struck out the side in the seventh to slam the door on any Wolverine hopes. Jake Josephs pitched an effective three and-a-third innings of relief to keep the game close. Luke Bondurant homered for the other South County run.

The Stallions are now 7-0 as they to South Carolina for a Spring Break tournament in Myrtle Beach.

Elsewhere on the diamond, Hayfield routed Falls Church 26-0. Bryan DiRosario slugged two homers to give him eight on the year. Josh Eldridge also homered. Cory Spera picked up the win, allowing one hit and fanning seven. The win moves Hayfield to 8-1 on the year. They’ll play in a tournament in Virginia Beach next week during Spring Break.

South County softball dropped a tough 5-4 decision to West Potomac yesterday to drop to 5-3 on the campaign. After they play Woodbridge on Monday, the girls will be off until the 27th.

TENNIS

South County’s boys team beat TC Williams on Thursday 8-1. Winning in singles were: Daniel Shlossman, Spenser Bullock, Tyler Lam, Jack Proctor and Adam Epstein. Doubles winners were Shlossman and Masakayan, Bullock and Proctor, Lam and Epstein.

South County girls’ also beat TC Williams, by a count of 5-4. Individual results were not provided.

LACROSSE

The Hayfield boys’ team split two matches on Thursday and Friday.  On Thursday the Hawks routed Stuart 16-3. Christian Davis led the way with six goals and four assists. Nick Lambert chipped in with two goals and two assists while Ramon Barron helped control the action with six takeaways and eight ground balls.

The Hawks could not put two straight together however, as they lost to Mount Vernon on Friday, 10-2.

On Thursday, South County's boys edged TC Williams 13-12, for their third win of the year. The Stallions' defense was a little wobbly early, but seized control in the second half in time for the offense to get cranked up. Keys to the effort were juniors Peter Basnight, Taylor Wirth and Travis Gordon.

South County’s girls’ lacrosse team fell to TC Williams 16-12.
