Lightning Suspends SoCo Softball's Playoff Opener

Stallions hold 3-1 lead over Annandale in Patriot District tourney game which will resume this evening.

Lightning and impending rain suspended the first round of the Patriot District softball tournament Wednesday evening at South County Secondary School.

The game was called at the top of the fourth inning when lightning struck in the distance as South County held a 3-1 lead over Annandale. Play will resume tonight at 6:30 p.m. from where it left off.

“We were very happy with the way we were hitting the ball. We were hitting and playing very well so we're kind of disappointed that we have to wait until tomorrow,” said South County head coach Gary Dillow.

With Patriot District Pitcher of the Year Isabelle Yaroch on the mound, Dillow knew that runs would hard be hard to come by.

“Isabelle is a great pitcher, she was just named pitcher of the year in our district,” Dillow said.

South County catcher Haylea Geer was undeterred by Yaroch’s credentials. Before the interruption, Geer drove in two runs and prevented an Annandale run with a perfect tag out at home. Shortstop Whitney Burks tore up the basepaths, stealing a base in both the first and third inning.

Unfortunately for South County, they will have to wait until tomorrow to see if their impressive performances result in a victory.
