Virginia School Supply and Clothing Sales Tax Holiday

Virginia has an annual tax break allowing tax-free purchases of school supplies and clothing.

This weekend is Virginia’s Sales Tax Holiday, where the normal 5% state sales tax is waived on certain school supplies, clothing, and shoes. The tax holiday is always the first weekend of August and this year it is August 5,6, and 7th. With back to school shopping ranging from $20 for the basics to well over $500 for new shoes, clothes, and gadgets, this can be a great way to save. Add the tax free savings to coupons and retailers specials and the savings can run from 10-20%.

All basic school and office supplies up to $20 are tax free. Excluded are electronics, computers, and computer hardware, and printer supplies.  The list of tax exempt items includes crayons, folders, markers, pencils, paper, notebooks, rulers, and calculators.

Clothing and shoe items up to $100 are tax exempt. Most clothing items are included in the tax break, but clothing accessories, sports equipment, and protective equipment are not. Clothing items exempt from tax include jeans, suits, shoes, baby clothing, jackets, and coats.

Are you wondering what you need to purchase for your child to get back to school? Most school websites post their supply list online. Secondary Schools do not have set high school list, but most students have an idea what they will need for different classes. The middle school list is standard, but certain teams and classes may add extra supplies at the beginning of the year.
