Students pick up schedules, prepare for first day of classes this week
The brand new South County Middle School opened its doors on Wednesday to students and parents in the first annual Mustang Round-up. Families picked up school schedules, put money on lunch cards and signed up for the parent-viewed Blackboard portal, which allows them to see homework assignments online.
South County Middle School Principal Marsha Manning greeted families from 5 to 7 p.m.
"We really want the Lorton community to feel that this is their school and we want students to really want to be here," Manning told Patch. "It's really nice to have everyone here, and the faculty is very excited."

There are 1,045 incoming seventh and eighth grade students at SCMS, as of Wednesday.
Rising seventh grader Ethan Bartel has mixed feelings about going back to school.

"I'm kind of iffy about it," he said. "The new school is pretty good. I just can't wait to see the gym."
And the best part of leaving elementary school?
"We don't have the small desks anymore and we have lockers," incoming seventh grader Ben Mueller said.
School starts Sept. 4.
