The Mustang Morning News Is On The Air!

Friday morning saw the first broadcast from the news team at South County Middle School.

"Good morning, Mustangs!" said a smiling Ellen Gallagher to her classmates on Friday from the South County Middle School broadcast studio.

At 9:20 a.m., all classrooms turned their televisions to Channel 6. Gallagher's friendly greeting was followed by the Pledge of Allegiance, and a morning round-up of news with her co-anchor Keighan Speer.

"Remember that the PTSO is still collecting quarters to help the victims of Hurricane Sandy," said Speer. "This is an opportunity for you to make a difference!"

The broadcast lasted about five minutes.

Afterward, principal Marsha Manning congratulated the anchors. "You all did a wonderful job. You young ladies are pros at this already," she said. "You really exceeded our expectations."

Cheryl DeVincentis, the South County Middle and High School speech arts teacher, had solid advice for her students. "I told them to relax and smile. If you make a mistake you just get over it and move on, like an Olympic skater, and they (the news team) know that the professionals make mistakes too."

Speer admits to being nervous. "I was excited, but I was shaking and I was hoping people couldn't see it. It'll get easier," she said.

The whole production wouldn't have been possible without the direction of 8th -grader Jackson Ervin. "To make this work it takes a lot of communication," he said. "We have to get along with each other, and it gets tough. We're very different from each other, but we still have to make it work."
