Photos: The South County Secondary Class of 2012 Graduation

It was the last ride for these South County Stallions.

More than 500 seniors walked across the stage and received their graduation diplomas on Monday. The two-hour service was attended by a festive crowd of thousands at the George Mason University Patriot Center.

South County Principal Dr. Jane Lipp recognized this particular class for beginning sixth grade when the school opened six years ago. "Individually, and as a class, you have touched our hearts and inspired our souls," she told the class.Β 

Former U.S. Secretary of State Gen. Colin Powell made the commencement address (his second for the school), and challenged the students to take chances.Β

South County honor graduate Beakal Gezahegn patted her class on the back. "We made it," she said. "We've definitely become part of South County's history. We're the authors, and I think we wrote a best-seller."Β
