Sports Round-Up: South County Stallion Wrestlers Host Annandale

Stallions wrestling team took home wins last week.

Players mostly came back strong and healthy from winter break. Here’s a round-up of sports highlights from Alexandria and southern Fairfax County.

South County: Stallion wrestlers traveled to West Springfield on Jan. 4 and posted victories against West Springfield (52-21) and Wakefield (57-9) grapplers. The meet’s wins were the Stallions’ fifth and sixth of the season.

West Potomac: The Wolverine boys basketball team (8-3, 2-2 Patriot District) went 1-1 in Patriot District play last week following the holiday break. West Potomac defeated Annandale 51-46 on Jan. 3 but dropped a 66-51 contest against Woodson on Jan. 6.

Up Next: West Potomac hosts West Springfield on Jan. 10 at 7:30 p.m.

Mount Vernon: The Lady Majors moved to 10-1 (4-0 National District) on the season with a on Jan. 6. Sophomore Samantha Porter led the Majors in scoring with 14 points and sophomore Chanel Shannon hit four three-pointers to help carry the team to victory.

Up Next: The Majors host Yorktown on Jan. 9 at 7:45 p.m.

Robinson: Rams boys basketball (10-3, 2-0 Concorde District) defeated Yorktown 63-53 on Jan. 3 and Centreville 54-44 on Jan 6. The Rams are currently on a four-game win streak and haven’t lost since Dec. 27. Tristian Crenshaw leads the team in scoring with 16.5 points per game.

Up Next: Robinson travels to Westfield on Jan. 10.

Hayfield: Hayfield’s boys JV basketball continued its undefeated season with wins last week over Stuart and Wakefield. Against Wakefield, the Hawk defense was relentless, tallying 13 steals, 2 blocks and 31 defensive rebounds.

Up Next: The Hawks look to continue their undefeated run against Edison on Jan. 9.

Lee: The Lady Lancer (2-9, 1-3 Patriot District) basketball team continues to struggle, losing games against T.C. Williams and Annandale last week. The team has two wins on the season (Stuart and South County). The Lancers will attempt to grab their third win of the season on Jan. 10 against Woodson.

Up Next: Lee hosts Woodson on Jan 10 at 7:30 p.m.

West Springfield: Life without starting point guard April Robinson hasn’t been too difficult for the Lady Spartan (10-2, 4-0 Patriot District) basketball team. Robinson’s been sidelined with an ankle injury since early December. The Spartans defeated South County by 40 points on Jan. 3 and beat T.C. Williams 49-48 on Jan. 6 in a rematch of last year’s Northern Region championship.

Up Next: West Springfield hosts West Potomac on Jan. 10 at 7:30 p.m.

Annandale: The Lady Atoms basketball team (6-5, 3-1 Patriot District) went 2-0 last week, defeating West Potomac 61-39 and Lee 64-34. The wins were the Atoms’ third and fourth consecutive. Senior Jacqueline Beathea leads the team in scoring with 15.3 points per game.

Up Next: Annandale hosts Lake Braddock on Jan. 10 at 7:30 p.m.
