Stallion field hockey advances to state semifinals, football to playoffs

South County Field Hockey (19-5):

Stephanie Halsted scored two goals Tuesday evening to help lift the Stallions over Hanover (Mechanicsville, Va.) in the opening round of the Virginia State High School League state tournament. The win advances the Stallions to the semifinals, where they draw First Colonial High School (Virginia Beach, Va.), in Virginia Beach on Friday, November 11.

South County’s headed back to postseason play after a one-year absence. After beginning the season with three consecutive losses, the Stallions have won seven straight and host James Madison this Friday, November 11 in the Northern Region playoff’s opening round. 

The Stallions defeated Woodson 24-6 last Friday in the team’s final game of the regular season. And in doing so, captured the 2011 Patriot District title. Andrew Rector gashed Woodson’s defense for 142 yards on 13 carries and scored a touchdown from 1-yard out. Timmy Hunt scored rushing touchdowns from two and eight yards and Michael Ferguson successfully kicked a 23-yard field goal.

Sticking to their formula of suffocating defensive play, the Stallions forced four fumbles and recovered three, while holding starting Woodson running back Nick Peevy to 20 yards on 10 carries. 

Madison, who shares the same record as South County, defeated Marshall 24-0 last Friday. 

JV Football (5-2-1):

The JV Stallions defeated Woodson 38-24 and closed out the season with five wins. 

South County Volleyball (22-6):

Yorktown defeated South County 3-2 Tuesday evening and ended the Stallions’ season. Despite the loss, the team finished the season with 22 wins, four more than last year.
