Cathy Klocek Named South County Secondary Cheerleading Coach

Have you ever tried a high-splits pyramid?

Cheerleading veteran Cathy Klocek was recently promoted varsity cheer coach at South County Secondary School.

“South County has a lot of talent and we’ve always had fabulous kids. We have the potential to make it a great year,” said Klocek, who has been active with the South County squad since graduating from James Madison University in 2008.

When the pompoms aren't in her hands, the Fairfax County native is a second grade teacher at Newington Forest Elementary in Springfield.

“I love the kids. They have always been the reason that I coach. Especially the South County kids, who come from my background and home area,” said Klocek. “I’ve always had a special bond with them.”

Mike Pflugrath, South County Secondary director of student activities, made the announcement on July 6. "We are excited to have Cathy as the new head cheer coach," he said. "She is well-respected within our community, school, students, and staff. Her dedication and commitment to South County is quite evident."

Klocek began cheering when she was eight-years-old. She attended Hayfield Secondary and was the team captain her junior and senior years. She was also named to all-district and all-region teams during her high school career.

At JMU, Klocek earned a bachelor’s degree in elementary education and master’s degree in teaching. She was also a four-year member of Madison’s gymnastics team.

Klocek hit the ground running since being named head coach. She’s met with parents and has begun strength and conditioning workouts with student athletes in preparation of team tryouts, which begin next month.

While Klocek carries an intense passion for cheerleading, her life outside of the sport is a little more diverse. "I like to go the the beach to spend time with friends and family," she said, "and to be able to just hangout and relax, since teaching and coaching takes up a lot of my time."
