Widening of Route 1 Scheduled to Begin Late March

The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) has scheduled a "Pardon Our Dust" public information meeting at Hayfield Secondary School on March 20.

The widening of Route 1, Richmond Highway from Telegraph Road to Napper Road, is scheduled to begin by late March or early April. The work will stretch from Telegraph Road to Mount Vernon Memorial Highway.

The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) has scheduled a "Pardon Our Dust" public information meeting at Hayfield Secondary School, 7630 Telegraph Road, on Thursday, March 20 at 7 p.m.

This project involves widening a 3.5 mile stretch of U.S. Route 1 through Fort Belvoir and is necessary due to growth resulting from the 2005 Base Realignment and Closure (BRAC) by the Department of Defense, and the opening of the new Fort Belvoir Community Hospital.

These recent developments have led to a significant traffic increase on what was already a busy road. It is the goal of this project to improve the quality of life for those serving within Fort Belvoir, as well as alleviating congestion for the surrounding area. The project is currently in the design phase, with construction starting in the Spring of 2014.

If you're interested in more detailed information about this project to include a timeline and impact to traffic and surrounding roadways, plan to attend and ask your question(s). Officials will be available 30 minutes prior to the start of the meeting and 30 minutes after the meeting.
