VDOT To Remove Damaged 30-Foot Sign Structure Tonight On I-95

Might lead to answers on fallen I-66 sign last week

You may see traffic on I-95 tonight. At 9 p.m., a crew with the Virginia Department of Transportation will remove a 30-foot-tall cantilevered sign structure located on southbound I-95 at the Prince William Parkway in Woodbridge.

Two anchor bolts were found to be cracked during an ultrasonic test earlier today. Such structures are inspected every five years, and a 2008 test on the I-95 structure found no problems, VDOT reported.

A similar structure collapsed last week on I-66, and the test was conducted to shed light on the investigation. "The structure that fell on I-66 was last inspected in December 2007 and ultrasonic testing of the anchor bolts was performed since the 2007 inspection," according to a VDOT press release.

A VDOT inspection team has checked 25 of 261 cantilevered signs in northern Virginia. The testing is expected to be finished by the end of March.
