Soil Erosion Tarp on Silverbrook Road in Lorton to be Removed

It's been there since 2011.

More than a year-and-a-half after severe rain caused heavy rain and flooding across the Commonwealth, a large white tarp will reportedly soon be removed from a hill along Silverbook Road in Lorton.

"I'm happy to report that Richmond American (the property owner) is working very aggressively," said Christine Morin, senior aide to Mount Vernon Supervisor Gerry Hyland, on Tuesday at the monthly South County Federation meeting. "Hopefully in the next 30-60 days we'll see something on this."

The Fairfax County Department of Public Works has conducted soil erosion tests on the hill and determined last year that the soil was no longer moving and that the tarp could be removed.

Representatives with Richmond American Homes were not available to comment on this story.

Kyung Whelan and her family live next to the hill. "Every time it rains someone comes and adds more plastic to the tarp," she said in a previous interview. "I'm very tired of it. It's very ugly. It looks bad and I'm worried about my kids playing after school out there. It's not safe."
