Until tomorrow, Lorton's former Reformatory Juvenile Correctional Facility is home to Exercise Capital Shield 12, a regional training exercise conducted by Joint Force Headquarters-National Capital Region/Military District of Washington.

Soldiers, sailors, airmen, Marines and Coast Guardsmen participate in a series of training alongside local fire and rescue departments as if they were dealing with a real emergency.

Exercises included: 

• CBRNE (Chemical, biological, radiological, nuclear and high-yield explosives), response, urban search and rescue tasks and mass casualty evacuations
• Helicopter evacuations of victims with simulated injuries are being conducted by the US Army's 12th Aviation Battalion, the Air Force's 1st Helicopter Squadron and the 121st Medical Company of the D.C. National Guard

Local partners and hospitals ivolved in the exercise include: 

• DC Fire and Emergency Medical Support
• Alexandria City, Fairfax, Arlington, Montgomery and Prince George's County Fire Departments
• The Fairfax County Community Emergency Response Team
• Metropolitain Corps of Chaplains
• Southern Maryland Hospital Center
• Prince George's Regional Hospital
