National Fire Safety Week in Lorton

What Should I Read: Ten Kids' Books about Fire Fighters, Fire Trucks and Fire Safety

"Smoke Alarms: A Sound You Can Live With" is the theme of National Fire Safety Week, October 4 - 9, 2010. The Lorton Volunteer Fire Station, located at 7701 Armistead Road, and the Gunston Fire Station, 10417 Gunston Road, will each host a Fire Prevention Week open house from 10 to 4 on Saturday, October 9.

In recognition of Fire Prevention Week, here are ten books for kids about fire fighters, fire trucks and fire safety.

Fire Truck by Caroline Bingham

The Fairfax County Fire and Rescue Department, established in 1949, is a combination career and volunteer organization, with 37 stations serving the county.

The National Fire Protection Association has sponsored Fire Prevention Week since 1922.  The observance is always held on the Sunday through Saturday period in which October 9 falls, in remembrance of the October 8 and 9, 1871, Great Chicago Fire.
