Meadowood-Gunston Elementary Educational Trail Now Open

Partnership between BLM-ES and FCPS

Earlier today a 1,240 foot long trail was dedicated in a ribbon-cutting ceremony behind Gunston Elementary School. The trail connects to the trail system of the Meadowood Special Recreation Area.

The trail is a result of partnership between the Bureau of Land Management-Eastern States, which manages Meadowood, and Fairfax County Public Schools.

Following a ribbon-cutting, about two dozen volunteers braved cold April weather to help tidy up the area around the trail now that it is open to the public. The Mason Neck Lions provided snacks and refreshments and donations were accepted by the Lorton Community Action Center.

Surrounded by hardwood forest, Jeff McCusker, Site Manager at Meadowood, is optimistic that the trail can be an environmental education site. “We hope it is the beginning of an outdoor education laboratory.”

The trail will be open from sunrise to sunset.
