Lorton Students Give Facelift To Lorton Library Statue

The large-scale open book sculpture at the Lorton Library is bare no longer. A group of Lorton Station Elementary School students have added some color.

There are open book sculptures at every library in the county, and all but one had artwork from local artists on the inside pages.

"Ours was painted over with chalkboard paint, and it was a nice idea but not very practical," said branch manager Gari Plehal. "We'd have to constantly monitor what was written and we'd have to supply the chalk."

The pages of the open book sculpture now depict planet Earth, a bookworm wearing a graduation cap and sitting on a stack of books and the words "Reading Is Fun For Everyone!!"

"We thought a bookworm would be nice because this is a library and we put a graduation cap on him because you're still a reader after you graduate," said 12-year-old artist Wan Li.
