Update: Higher Voter Turnout Than Expected

Poll workers being kept busy

Local and State elections are usually decided in low-turnout elections, but this year returns have poll workers surprised.

The warm, sunny weather had something to do with the turnout, said Lorton precinct 617 captain Anthony Porcaro. "The weather has really been super and that gets people out the door," he said. I was working in the June primary on the day of the earthquake, and that did not help at all. We had to evacuate, and I wouldn't leave these machines alone… So far so good."

Lorton precinct 617, based at the Lorton Library, reported 340 voters out of 2,500 registered voters as of 4:50 p.m.

Lorton resident Henry Sage was mostly pleased that the end of the political season will mean an end to campaign signs along roadways. "I think of the money that is wasted on signs, phone calls, intrusion into our private lives. I got a call from South Dakota for God's sake," said Sage, an American history professor at Northern Virginia Community College. "I know all this stuff is here for a reason, but it's such a waste. It just makes me sick. And, it's illegal to put the signs on the [George Washington Memorial] Parkway, but they do it anyway."

At 3:45 p.m., Gunston precinct 616 had 345 voters out of 2500 registered voters.

South County precinct 629 had 90 voters as of 11:15 a.m. "It's been steady all day," said South County precinct captain John Wilson. "There was a morning rush, and it's been keeping us busy. We can't get a break."

Precinct 628 in Laurel Hill had 272 voters as of 11:30 a.m. "It's surprised me. To me, it's higher than expected," said Laurel Hill precinct captain Robert Mclean. "I was looking for about 10%, which we'll beat by quite a bit."

Election numbers varied wildly across Fairfax County, from 6.9 percent to nearing 40 percent in areas with "hotly contested races", according to the .

The County has 640,689 "active" voters.

There is still time to vote! Polls close at 7:00 p.m.
